Pet Food Express is looking for an experienced and adaptable Director of Facilities to join our team! The Director of Facilities oversees all aspects of facilities and maintenance for 68 retail locations, ensuring smooth and efficient store operations through proactive maintenance, effective project management, and strong leadership of the facilities and maintenance teams. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this role involves oversight of remodeling projects, building system upkeep, and emergency repairs, while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness. 

Please Note: This position is a hybrid role and requires weekly on-site work from our corporate office (Concord, CA), distribution center (Oakley, CA) and occasional travel across 68 store locations within the state.  Candidates who are fully remote or outside of reasonable commuting distance will not be considered at this time.


 

Responsibilities:

Team Leadership and Department Oversight
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and direction to the maintenance department, including on-site maintenance technicians, fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Oversee the Facilities and Maintenance Department for all store locations, ensuring efficient operation, adherence to project timelines, and quality of work.
  • Establish and monitor team performance goals, ensure timely completion of maintenance tasks, and promote accountability for consistent, high-quality results.
Facilities and Maintenance Management
  • Direct all phases of facilities-related projects for retail locations, including routine maintenance, building repairs, refurbishments, and systems upkeep (mechanical, electrical, fire safety).
  • Conduct on-site inspections to assess facility conditions and coordinate necessary repairs or enhancements to meet operational standards.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance issues promptly, ensuring minimal disruption to store operations.
Remodel Project Management
  • Oversee light project management tasks focused on store remodels and exterior façade work as outlined in lease agreements.
  • Coordinate and manage remodel projects from planning through execution, including timeline and budget management to ensure projects stay on track.
  • Interface with landlords, government agencies, and internal stakeholders as needed to ensure compliance and alignment with company standards.
Budget and Cost Management
  • Develop and manage the facilities and maintenance budget, identifying cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality.
  • Support the Chief Operating Officer on major capital expenditure (CapEx) projects as required.
Continuous Improvement and Efficiency
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency within the maintenance department, streamline processes, and implement best practices to enhance the longevity and functionality of store facilities.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: 5+ years in facilities or maintenance management, preferably in a multi-site retail environment with a focus on remodels and maintenance.
  • Project Management Skills: Demonstrated ability to oversee remodeling projects, manage timelines, and handle on-site inspections for quality assurance.
  • Basic Construction Knowledge: Understanding of building maintenance practices, minor construction management, and standard building systems (mechanical, electrical, fire safety).
  • Budget Management: Experience managing budgets and optimizing resources to achieve cost-effective outcomes.
  • Leadership and Communication: Proven leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and guide teams. Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with landlords, government agencies, and cross-functional teams.
  • Organization and Problem-solving: Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Strong discernment, including problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and self-initiative
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout California with flexibility to work different hours-including early morning and late-night work and weekends (see store map for PFE locations https://www.petfood.express/stores/)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Outlook and Excel), computer estimating, scheduling, database applications

The salary range for this position is expected to be $130,000/yr - $145,000/yr. Pet Food Express determines starting salary based on many factors, including but not limited to, local market rate, the qualified pool of candidates, internal compensation practices, a candidate’s actual skills and experience.
