As a Technical Director on the team, you will be responsible for developing new technologies, providing general oversight (audit and review) of team projects, and interfacing with other business units such as R&D and InfoSec on product direction and security initiatives.
As the Director of VMware Data Center Engineering team, you will assess, develop and integrate technologies with existing and future Data Centers. Our Data Centers provide service for all of VMware. Your role will be closely connected to our partners, enabling the organization via conduits you will develop and maintain for rapid deployment, integration and access to critical R&D environments. Your responsibilities are heavily focused on storage and network technologies, including related availability, resiliency, automation, consolidation, scale and security directives set by your staff and our partners in collaboration with relevant architecture teams.
Your ability to evaluate and identify areas of opportunity and work across professional bureaucratic and political lines is crucial to our organization's success. To be successful in this position, you will need to be able to demonstrate strong analytical and communication (written and verbal) skills.
We are a 24x7 DevOps organization and support our partners via on-call availability. Your role will be a member of our Tier 3-4 support staff and will be used in the event of escalation.
ResponsibilitiesThe Technical Director will serve as a resource and liaison for the DCE team, and will be responsible for enhancing data center operations. Responsibilities will include the following:
- Identify areas of opportunity to bring relief and scale to VMware Data Center Engineering Services.
- Homogenize and integrate architectures across existing and new Data Centers.
- Bring security, governance and compliance assessments and solutions to VMware Engineering Services.
- Heavy focus on the reduction of manual effort with a direct target of enabling VMware Engineering Services to scale and move faster.
- Develop and hire engineers to support our objectives.
- Bring experienced software development and infrastructure architecture capabilities to Vmware Data Center Engineering Services.
- Build and maintain conduits of trust between VMware Engineering Services and our partners.
- Review and improve existing protocols and manual processes to support your objectives.
- Leverage best-of-breed technologies and design methodologies to create fit-for-purpose solutions.
- Coordinate with R&D and all Vmware Partners on new requirements, feature requests, and product roadmap.
- Coordinate with InfoSec on security initiatives, incident reviews, and future designs.
- Work with leadership and other DCE team members to establish technical direction.
- Provide leadership in technical forums, conferences, and cross-departmental initiatives.
- Present at internally- and externally-facing meetings, webinars, and conferences.

- Willing to drive and support change, even when faced with difficult political hurdles
- Advanced understanding of security elements: access controls, governance, compliance, auditing, cryptography, identity (AD, LDAP, Kerberos, SSO, SAML, OAUTH, PKI)
- Advanced understanding of physical and virtual data center infrastructure, dependencies, and resilient design - server architecture, storage SAN/NAS, networking, monitoring, and management
- Experience and working knowledge of VMware products
- Advanced understanding of containerization (Docker/Kubernetes)
- Experience with product/service lifecycle evaluation, introduction, operation, retirement
- Experience with product development requirements, design, code, debug, test, Agile
- Proficiency in scripting and coding
- People, program, and project management
- Excellent written and oral skills
