Position Description:
The Crisis Care Clinician must be licensed or licensed-eligible. The Crisis Care Clinician is designated to lead the Crisis Response Team to respond to mental health crises in SBH clinics, Crisis Receiving Center, or in the community. The Crisis Care Clinician is responsible for Prescreenings, Mobile Crisis Response, and Crisis Stabilization functions within SBH's catchment area. This is a day shift position that will typically work an alternating schedule for 11.5 hour shifts (Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday 7:00am to 6:30pm; Week 2: Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday). Hybrid-Work-from-Home options are considered with the approval of the Crisis Response Daytime Supervisor and Divisional Director of Emergency Services. The incumbent for this position will work with the day time clinical staff, local hospital and local emergency room staff, law enforcement, magistrates, and other community partnering agencies in order to assist individuals with stabilization from mental health crises. The successful professional should have experience in the management and assessment of mental health crises, as well as the ability to function in a high-needs, fast-paced environment. Crisis Services Professionals are considered essential staff and are required to work during times when the agency is closed for inclement weather and during holidays.

Part III Essential Functions (Tasks & Duties):
1. Responds to behavioral health crisis situations with empathy and compassion
2. Conducts comprehensive risk assessments and mental health evaluations of individuals presenting in crisis on site, at the Crisis Receiving Center, or in the community
3. Responds to crises at SBH locations, hospitals, schools, jails, and in the community, including client residences
4. Provides brief counseling, solution-focused therapy, de-escalation, and safety planning to individuals experiencing crisis.
5. Provides intensive therapy to assist with alleviation of crisis and heightened symptoms.
6. Must become certified as an Emergency Services Prescreener within 6 months of hire and understand state laws surrounding Emergency Custody Orders and Temporary Detention Orders.
7. Will conduct preadmission screening evaluations as necessary.
8. Will testify for civil commitment hearings locally and over the phone.
9. Actively partners and collaborates with law enforcement to ensure safety and to provide appropriate care
10. Assesses for the least restrictive treatment option, which may include hospitalization, crisis stabilization unit admission, SBH Crisis Stabilization, SBH outpatient treatment options, community partner outpatient treatment options, primary care, etc.
11. Answers crisis calls and provides over-the-phone interventions and treatment options for follow up.
12. Complete Comprehensive Needs Assessments and CEPP and provide a "warm handhold as the individual transitions from crisis to ongoing services.
13. Observe evaluations completed by QMHP and sign off on assessments and documentation as necessary, if licensed.
14. Advocate for individuals' needs.
15. Conduct treatment groups.
16. Assist with placement in hospitalization, including conducting bed searches.
17. Enters documentation and data into the Electronic Health Record & Database.
18. Maintains close communication with mental health center staff & participates in clinical staffings.
19. Participates in ongoing training.
20. Relays information regarding cases to Supervisor on call & after hours clinicians to ensure continuity of care
21. Complete ASAMs and assist individuals experiencing crises with accessing substance abuse treatment
22. Participate in a minimum 12 hours clinical supervision and complete a minimum 16 hours of CEs annual to maintain prescreener certification
23. Must be flexible with adjusting to program development
24. Embrace a positive attitude and support team by promoting a teamwork approach
25. Functions independently as well as in a team environment
26. Other tasks and duties as determined by Supervisor, Divisional Director, or Director

The entry level qualifications for this position are as follows:
A. Requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities:
1. Knowledge of mental health treatment and recovery models, substance abuse assessment, crisis intervention, psychiatric emergencies, substance use emergencies, side-effects of psychotropic medications, aggressive behavior management, Virginia psychiatric admission procedures, Virginia code concerning civil commitment procedures, the Crisis Intervention Team model (CIT), Marcus Alert, 988, and Human Rights regulations.
2. Knowledge and skills in safety assessments and safety planning.
3. Critical thinking skills to navigate mental health crises in the community.
4. Knowledge of area community resources.
5. Skills in medical documentation, crisis counseling, and public relations.
6. Ability to work collaboratively with community resources and agencies.
7. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
8. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under stressful circumstances.
B. Special licenses, registration or certificates:
Must be licensed or licensed-eligible (LPC or LCSW). Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record. Must become Certified Prescreener within 6 months of hire.

Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work

Professional experience working with individuals diagnosed with Severe Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders.
