Job Summary:
Responsible for the Rating and Underwriting of group business in the applicable market. Maintains motivated and productive staff by providing sound leadership and direction.
- Directs staff to ensure overall client satisfaction and appropriate level of service delivery.
- Develops and monitors goals for staff and provides ongoing feedback and coaching.
- Conducts performance reviews on an annual basis and administers salaries for the staff.
- Directs the employment activities of the office that include staffing, development, and training.
- Ensures staff meets all regulatory requirements and comprehends and complies with best practices, professional standards, internal policies, and procedures.
- Oversees development of rates, and production of settlements/reserves, and ERISA forms, as applicable.
- Oversees development and analysis of supporting documents and special reports, as needed.
- Reviews rating formulas, factors, and procedures for validity. Makes recommendations for change to contribute to the development of actuarially sound and competitive rates.
- Responsible for monitoring and meeting underwriting Product and membership goal, where applicable.
- Supports Sales and Account Management teams in communicating with clients, as needed.
- Works with ancillary areas in the Plan to ensure maximum efficiencies in all areas.
- Supervises or conducts the review of requests for underwriting exceptions, as needed.
- Communicates changes in underwriting, pricing, or other policies to staff.
- Responsible for communicating data and reporting needs to support areas and verifies accuracy of data received.
- Performs other duties as assigned by management.
- Accountable for maintaining effective internal controls over the processes and transactions under areas of responsibility including the completeness and accuracy of financial information and transactions, compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and the effectiveness and efficiency of operations.
Education/Experience- Bachelors degree preferred or equivalent work experience.
- Requires minimum of five (5) years experience in group medical underwriting.
- Prefers minimum of ten (10) years experience in the insurance environment.
- Prefers supervisory experience.
- Requires a valid drivers license.
Knowledge- Requires knowledge of Underwriting and Rating principles, theory and application.
- Requires knowledge of health insurance benefits offerings.
- Requires knowledge of rating formula applications.
- Must be proficient in the use of personal computers and supporting software in a Windows based environment, including MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Lotus Notes; Should be knowledgeable in the use of intranet and internet applications.
