HafenCity University Hamburg is seeking to fill the following position in the Professorship Digital City Science as soon as possible.
Research assistant in the "SURPRISE" project Urban Data Scientist to support research with 50% of regular weekly working hours. The position is limited until 30.11.2024.
HafenCity University Hamburg - University of Architecture and Metropolitan Development (HCU) - is a university focussing on the built environment. The HCU unites all aspects of construction in design and drafting, engineering and natural sciences as well as humanities and social sciences under one roof.
The Chair of Digital City Science (DCS) at the HCU researches digital technologies for the city and metropolitan development and applies them in a national and international context. The international and interdisciplinary team develops data-based approaches for the analysis and planning of complex urban systems and brings together expertise from architecture, urban and spatial planning, computer science and media technology. With an extensive network of partners, pioneering tools are developed that are used in basic research as well as in specific application projects and taught to students.
The overall goal of the project "Sustainable Urban Planning and Resilient Reconstruction in Ukraine with Spatial Data Science" (SURPRISE) is to equip Ukrainian cities with a comprehensive package of innovative tools and processes based on research in the field of digital city science. Digital tools for urban data processing will be presented, demonstrated and trained for sustainable development, resilience and reconstruction planning. The aim is to actively support the development of planning strategies and processes in accordance with the requirements of current and future legislation in Ukraine. The aim of the measure is to provide digital solutions and infrastructures as well as skills for analysing and synthesising geodata as a prerequisite for holistic and faster planning processes, for qualifying and updating existing urban concepts and for citizen participation and cooperation. In co-operation with local partners, relevant data is collected and processed in order to support urban planning, strategy development and policy-making. The corresponding methods and tools are made available to local users and stakeholders in the form of capacity building measures (mentoring, training and educational activities).
Specific objectives are:
1. enabling faster planning processes through the use of innovative digital tools that are able to accelerate and qualify the updating of existing planning concepts
2. providing digital solutions that serve as the basic infrastructure for the necessary data analysis and synthesis and can also enable new levels of citizen participation and co-design
3. support the development of local geodata infrastructures to counteract trends towards the centralisation of planning processes and data in Ukraine
The position is assigned to the professorship of Prof. Dr Jörg Rainer Noennig.
Your task is to set up a framework for demonstration projects for data-based urban development. You will research and review datasets that can be included in the framework and implement strategies to collect, process and store them in a way that they can be used to generate relevant insights for urban development in Ukraine. They have in-depth expertise in the processing of both (semi-)structured and unstructured (geo)data. A decisive factor in the review of the data sets and the entire framework lies not only in their technical feasibility but also in their applicability in the context of the project and the stakeholders involved (e.g. for digital participation, integrated neighbourhood planning, etc.). In addition, they contribute to the creation of training materials, manuals and the moderation of workshops.
