Position Description | Camp Nelson National Monument is a newly created unit of the National Park Service. This Internship will provide opportunities to work within and learn about how the NPS interprets and provided visitor services at Civil War to Civil Rights site. This internship will also be a unique opportunity to be involved with building the Interpretive division and the visitor services at anew NPS site. Additionally, this internship will also be a chance to conduct research needed to advance the understanding and interpretation of Camp Nelson National Monument, specifically the parks United States Colored Troops (USCT) Headstone. Camp Nelson National Monument USCT Headstone Project The project consists of identifying and mapping headstones of United States Colored Troops soldiers who enlisted into the USArmy at Camp Nelson at cemeteries across Kentucky. The intern will assist NPS staff with research; on site visits to cemeteries to photograph and identify graves; communicating and collaborating with local communities on research, restoration, cleanup projects; create social media posts and other digital media highlighting the individual and collective stories of the soldiers and their families. |
Learning Goal | It is our intent that the intern would learn or enhance from this experience: active listening,organization, brainstorming, documentation, communication skills, public speaking, research,writing, networking, a general understanding of the NPS, and highlighting the critical contribution of African American soldiers during the Civil War and post-war period, especiallyReconstruction, and the sharing the journey of formerly enslaved people following emancipation. |
Qualifications | (Note: qualities are desired but may not be required) Upper-level undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in history, public history,museum management, education, or work with youth Research and writing experience Excellent customer service and communications skills Desire to work with youth audiences Experience in public speaking and visual and social media communications Interest in interpretation, education, or museums Knowledge of subject matter, including Civil War,Reconstruction, Jim Crow, segregation and the early civil rights movement Dependability and punctuality. Participants must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident ( "green-card-holder) and currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. degree program at an accredited institution of higher education during the summer internship. Work Environment | Work environment is an office and/or visitor center. In some cases, in historic homes and buildings where famous Black leaders such as Frederick Douglass lived! Areas are air-conditioned. If COVID pandemic is present, applicant will work from home or other remoteNational Capital Parks-East takes a cross-disciplinary approach. In addition to the basic work opportunity in Visitor Services, interns will perform some duties or shadow assignments in resources management or administration. Moreover, field trips to other NPS sites will be scheduled so they can see the breadth of parks and opportunities NPS has to offer. |
Vehicle/License Requirement | A personal vehicle is highly recommended. |
