TEACHING ASSIGNMENT
Grades 9-12 School Counselor
The secondary counselor will join a three-person team of counselors to provide academic and social and emotional counseling services to approximately 600 students across grades 6-12, as assigned. As part of a 3-person team of social and emotional counselors, the position will also support the university counselor as needed with introducing future pathways and career options, as well as testing. The primary duties will be related to the social and emotional health of our student body. The position requires:
· An ability to develop a plan for the effective delivery of a comprehensive counseling program
· Familiarity with best practices relating to child protection protocols
· Capability of delivering college and career, social-emotional, and academic counselling classroom guidance lessons
· Providing a safe and nurturing counseling environment
· A demonstrated ability to form positive working relationships with students, colleagues, and families
· Monitoring academic progress and implementing interventions when appropriate
· Facilitating a successful grade 9 transition program
· A highly energetic, flexible, and approachable persona
· A familiarity with the IB MYP and DP programs preferred
· Providing individual and group counselling to students with identified needs and concerns
· The ability to collect and analyze data to guide program direction
· The ability to organize PSAT test administration
· Implementation of new student orientation and setting up mentor relationships for new students
· Facilitating schedule changes
· Assisting in crisis situations
· A familiarity with Maia Learning or a willingness to learn Maia Learning
· Comfortability in leading parent/student education programs
· Other duties as assigned
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Student-led evening events supervision or parent meetings;
OTHER
The school has a large co-curricular activities program and all teachers play a full and active role in leading activities. The expectation is that all teachers will offer at least one after-school activity in the year. The activity should be one of our existing activities or one that enhances our ASA program.
All teachers and counselors participate in annual China Trips, a 4-5 day experiential learning experience outside Guangzhou.
Wednesday faculty meetings after school are used for grade level, divisional full faculty, or departmental meetings and PD.

CURRICULUM

· Secondary School uses Common Core, NGSS, and AERO standards for core subject areas.
· Secondary School offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) and is in the process of adopting the Middle Years Programme (MYP). It also implements the Readers and Writers Workshop Model.

FACILITIES
The Science Park campus is located in the heart of Guangzhou’s technology center, Science City, in Huangpu District, where Upper Elementary students (Grades 4 and 5) and Secondary students (Grades 6-12) attend. The Science Park campus finished its complete renovation in August 2023 and has state-of-the art, well-equipped facilities with an open-concept design. The campus also features a Performing Arts Center with at theater, black box, music classrooms, and practice rooms; an Athletic Center with a natural grass field, an indoor 25-meter swimming pool, two gymnasiums with three full-sized courts, a fitness room, a dance studio, two external climbing walls, an indoor running track, and two rooftop spaces; and additional amenities that include innovation labs and design centers, a cafeteria and cafe area, a nurse's office, a creative multimedia space, and a central library.
TECHNOLOGY
All classrooms are equipped with the appropriate technology for interactive instruction. Starting in Grade 1, students are in a 1:1 device program, iPads for Grades 1-5 and laptops for Grades 6-12. Teachers incorporate the ISTE Standards into their curriculum with the support of the innovation technology coaches. Technology is integrated where appropriate, and the development of research and information literacy skills is expected. Each teacher is assigned a MacBook laptop.
