Position Summary

The JPB Foundation seeks an experienced social justice leader to serve as its Director of Program Management, a newly created position in a period of transformation under new leadership. The Director of Program Management plays a pivotal role in shaping and executing the foundation's programmatic strategies. Reporting to the SVP, Program Strategy and Management, the Director of Program Management will serve as his principal deputy in developing programmatic plans and infrastructure to ensure the effective implementation of strategies. While the program area SVPs will continue to report directly to the SVP, Program Strategy and Management, the Director of Program Management will work closely with that leadership body to ensure alignment and execution on priority work. They will also supervise select Program Strategy & Management team staff and consultants. The ideal candidate will possess a deep fluency and experience in power-building social movements and theories of change, with a proven track record of translating those theories into solid programs that achieve results. They will be skilled in internal management, aligning people and resources, and working with diverse stakeholders internally and externally to drive solutions. 

Responsibilities:

  • Programmatic Coordination and Implementation: Work with the SVP, Program Strategy and Management, and the team of program area SVPs and program staff to coordinate and implement program strategies, goals, plans and budgets for the foundation’s new programmatic direction. Ensure program staff at all levels are clear on goals and objectives and have pathways to achieving them.  
  • Strategic Planning: In partnership with the SVP, Program Strategy and Management, responsible for setting up timelines and work plans for medium- to long-term forward-looking strategy development, staff development, and programmatic elements (e.g. grantmaking, convenings, etc.) 
  • Internal Infrastructure Development: Lead on internal transformation projects to align processes, staff, and resources to achieve the new programmatic objectives of the foundation.
  • Facilitation and Development of Program Leadership and Staff Bodies: Lead agenda-setting and facilitation of program tables and leadership structures, ensuring all teams are working seamlessly towards a unified plan and strategy. Plans and coordinates Program Leadership Team meetings (both routine and step-back retreats) to ensure the highest contributions from Program SVPs.
  • External Program Development and Relationship Management: As assigned by the SVP, Program Strategy and Management, lead work on select foundation programs and initiatives; provide high-level strategic staffing to foundation senior leadership on external programs; also assist with convening, agenda-setting and facilitation of external consultation/advisory groups with field leaders and practitioners to inform/advise on JPB strategy.
  • Supervision and Management: Oversees and directly supervises assigned projects and staff in Program Strategy and Management.
  • Department Management and Communication: Facilitates internal communication flow throughout program staff, ensuring all staff in department are aligned on division goals, strategies, and progress. Ensures department-wide implementation of work on organizational values, culture, and staff development. 

Qualifications:

  • Significant department director-level leadership experience for social justice organizations and power-building or organizing initiatives that have resulted in major impact  
  • Significant knowledge of, and relationships within, the power building fields and movements where JPB’s new mission and program areas are focused
  • Effective operational executor who can bring together diverse and complex systems and disciplines (e.g. communications, operations, strategy, research, etc.) into coherence and alignment 
  • Proven track record in program development, implementation, and management, with a focus on achieving measurable impact, and demonstrated success in fast-paced and changing environments
  • Significant organizational change management experience desired
  • Strong interpersonal communications skills, an effective and strategic relationship-builder   
  • Flexibility and adaptability in an ever-changing environment 
  • Brings a sense of joy and humor to their work
  • Low-ego; committed to advancing the whole rather than themselves
  • Experience in managing and mentoring teams, fostering a positive and inclusive work culture
  • Deep fluency in social justice and equity principles, with the ability to integrate these principles into programmatic strategies and operations 
  • Grantmaking experience is a plus, but not required

SALARY & BENEFITS

The starting salary range for this position is $220,000 - $260,000 annually, commensurate with experience. JPB offers an extensive and generous benefits package including health insurance (with 100% of the premiums paid for employees, spouses, domestic partners, and qualified family members), paid time off (including last week of the year), 401(k) retirement plan with 12% employer contribution, and access to an inclusive family building reimbursement plan. JPB provides up to $5,000 annually for professional development and the ability to recommend an annual grant to the nonprofit of your choice.

This position is based in our NYC office. JPB staff operates on a hybrid schedule and currently works from the NYC office three days weekly, with the flexibility to work remotely two days weekly. Candidates must have current legal authorization to work in the U.S.
