Job Title: Licensed Practical Nurse
Job Location: South Carolina
Job Purpose:
Under the general supervision of the HCA, Head Nurse, and/or designee, observes, cares for and counsels inmates needing health care.
Job Functions:
1. Performs basic nursing care skills, i.e., vital signs, oxygen saturations, peak flow readings, assist with daily living skills, ROM exercise and documentation in medical record.
2. Observes patients to assist in identifying symptoms of physical or mental illness and report observations to MD or nurse.
3. Performs under supervision intermediate level nursing care skills, i.e., dressing changes, glucometer reading, performing QA on glucometers in compliance with CLIA, and treatments ordered by MD, using universal precautions.
4. Assist in the collection and proper handling of laboratory specimens.
5. Maintains 40-hours of in-service education per year to include all mandatory in-service and CPR certification.
6. Assist MD, i.e., physical exams, diagnostic procedures, etc. Provides assistance to attending physicians and nurses.
7. Participates in inmate health education. Promotes health programs and the prevention of illness in a correction setting.
8. Assist in orientation of new personnel.
9. Assist in the ordering counting and storage of all medical supplies.
10. Performs duties in medical records, filing, making inmate appointments, purging charts, etc.
11. Administers and accurately records the administration of medications for inmates as prescribed by the physician in accordance with established policies and procedures of the SCDC.
12. Observes, records and reports to the Staff Nurse symptoms and conditions of inmates that could be related to medication interactions, adverse drug reactions or medication side effects.
13. Administers medication to inmates as directed by the HCA, Head Nurse, and/or designee.
14. Documents medication administration in a timely and accurate manner on the MAR (Medication Administration Record)
