Genetic Counselor:
The genetic counselor is a licensed healthcare professional with a specialized graduate degree and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. Genetic counselors may also have engaged in research activities related to the field of medical genetics and genetic counseling.
Description for Covendis Position
The Genetic Counselor will be a part of a team In the Tennessee Newborn Screening Program which is charged with follow-up on babies screened at birth for metabolic conditions, hearing, and critical congenital heart disease. The genetic counselor will work to develop and implement a new system for long-term follow-up on selected conditions. The position will require an in-person equipment pickup at the beginning, hybrid in-person/remote orientation, and then hybrid in-person/remote full-time work (37.5 hours per week). The in-person work will be at the State Laboratory, 630 Hart Lane, Nashville.
The team will want to interview candidates (Interview team TBD).
Minimum Education/Experience Qualifications
Minimum Requirements: Masters degree in genetic counseling from an accredited program; licensed as a genetic counselor in Tennessee (current and valid); Board-certified or eligible; two years of experience working as a genetic counselor is preferred.
Other Requirements
Proficient at managing electronic data and navigating complex databases and attention to detail.
Demonstrated experiences in time management, customer service, and working on teams.
Experience in public health and health data such as vital records or health survey data (preferred).
Knowledge of newborn screening disorders and treatments (preferred).
The Genetic Counselor will:
Under administrative direction of the Pediatric Case Management and Follow-up Director, provide professional direction related to genetic counseling, including, leadership, planning, and coordination of the implementation of delivery of services for a variety of highly technical statewide programs related to public health promotion and education in genetics.
Work as a member of the health care team, to provide genetic risk assessment, counseling, information, and support to individuals and families affected with genetic disorders, as well as those who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions.
Serve as a patient advocate and refer individuals and families to appropriate support services and serve as educator and resource support for trainees, other health care professionals, and the public.
Develop and coordinate a new long-term follow-up program for providers and families of those babies identified through the States newborn screening program and diagnosed with one of the disorders on the screening panel.
Track outcomes of babies diagnosed with these disorders over time.
Interact with providers (primary care providers, specialists, staff at the tertiary centers), families, and newborn screening laboratory and short-term follow-up staff (lab managers and technicians, nurses, epidemiologists, and administrative personnel).
Perform clinical work, administrative work, team interactions and coordination, use of the newborn screening database and interpretation of data, and development of procedures and quality assurance reports for tracking outcomes over time.
