POSITION TITLE: Bengali Interpreter
REPORTS TO: Resettlement & Placement Program Manager

As a contractor interpreter, you’ll play a vital role in bridging communication gaps. Your work may include interpreting between clients and caseworkers, assisting clients with health officials, or facilitating group sessions such as Cultural Orientation classes. While most appointments are scheduled during our business hours (Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM), you may also have the opportunity to work evening or night assignments, such as airport arrivals. CORE FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION - Accurately interpret verbal communication and translate written materials between Bengali and English, ensuring the content and spirit of the original message are conveyed, while considering cultural context.
- Maintain confidentiality of all information disclosed during interpreting sessions.
- Uphold impartiality by refraining from counseling, advising, or expressing personal biases or beliefs.
- Maintain the boundaries of the professional role, avoiding personal or inappropriate professional involvement beyond the role of interpreter.
- Actively develop awareness of personal and cultural differences encountered in professional duties.
- Treat all parties involved with respect and dignity.
- When necessary, explain culturally complex concepts to CIRA staff and suggest strategies for effective communication.
QUALIFICATIONS- Fluency in Bengali and English required.
- Strong commitment to CIRA’s mission and values in serving immigrants/refugees/newcomers.
- Deep understanding of and ability to work sensitively and well with people of diverse national, ethnic, cultural, religions, gender identities, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Exhibits responsibility through good attendance, effective time management, dependability, self-discipline, flexibility, and working independently.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, self-insured vehicle, and a clean driving record.
- Ability to pass all required background checks.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
WORKING CONDITIONS- This is a contractor position with a Monday to Friday workweek. Please note that there is no guaranteed number of hours per week.
COMPENSATION - Pay rate is $25.00 per hour
