The Role
The Tissue Culture Specialist leads the scientific and production aspect of the company’s tissue culture program which is responsible for preserving genetics and restoring diseased cannabis cultivars when possible, with various available methods.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the formulation, adjustment, and execution of media formulations and production scheduling.
- Responsible for directing and overseeing the work of a Tissue Culture Technician.
- Will perform the processes for preserving genetics and restoring diseased Cannabis cultivars when possible with available methods.
- Conducts a variety of standardized tests and analyses, such as viral testing, in accordance with established methods and procedures while ensuring quality control and time constraints are met
- Environmental monitoring and adjustment of the growth environment
- Cleaning and sanitizing work areas, glassware, and lab, as a sterile environment is crucial to success
- Track and record explant development with photos and use of a standard lab notebook and required state tracking systems.
- Communicate with third party consultants and remote site leads on methodology, results, etc.
- Autoclave, sterile filter, and otherwise prepare media and dispense TC media using sterile technique
- Initiate, multiply, and root explants based on written and verbal instructions under supervision
- Conduct digital research and reviews of literature to improve their ability.
- Safeguard GTI genetic library and ensure survival of GTI proprietary cultivars
Qualifications
- BS in BCMB, Genetics, Plant Propagation, Organic Chemistry, or similar degrees based on applicability
- 2 years' experience in Cannabis tissue culture may be substituted for education for the correct candidate
- Previous experience in plant tissue culture preferred, but animal cell culture is acceptable for the right candidate.
- Highly motivated, self-directed, innovative, and able to work independently or among teams with keen judgement, common sense, and resourcefulness
- Ability to self-teach if struggling with core knowledge
- Adapts and thrives in a demanding, fast-paced environment
- Possesses a high level of critical thinking
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent written observational skills with objective analytical description
- Basic understanding of lab equipment, glassware, and lab safety
- Must be proficient in sterile technique
- Operates with a high level of professionalism and integrity, including dealing with confidential information
- Must understand and comply with the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of Green Thumb Working Conditions
- Approximately room temperature lab (60-80 F)
- Some exposure to hazardous/toxic chemicals while wearing correct PPE
- Some exposure to bright lighting
- Some chances for burns and broken glass due to the nature of the work, avoidable with correct lab safety and attention to detail.
Additional Requirements
- Must pass any and all required background checks
- Must be and remain compliant with all legal or company regulations for working in the industry
- Must possess valid driver’s license
- Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
- Must be approved by state badging agency to work in cannabis industry
