Senior Counsel, Privacy
Nielsen is seeking an experienced privacy/data protection attorney to join its Legal Privacy Team on a permanent basis. This position will be based in the US, with flexibility regarding location.
As Privacy Counsel, you will work closely with a global team of privacy and data protection professionals, ensuring compliance with privacy and data protection regulations while supporting business innovation. You will report directly to the Chief Privacy Officer.
Responsibilities:
- Provide legal counsel to the Nielsen Legal Department and business stakeholders on global data protection and privacy laws, regulations, and industry guidelines, with a focus on US laws and industry standards (e.g., DAA, IAB, NAI).
- Advise on the development and review of products and solutions, including traditional market research panels and ad tech-related products (e.g., tags, cookies, connected TV), ensuring compliance with applicable privacy laws and promoting privacy by design.
- Review, draft, and negotiate commercial contracts with significant privacy and data protection implications, both with customers and vendors.
- Assess business risks and requirements arising from new and evolving privacy laws and regulations.
- Conduct privacy impact assessments and review data collection and usage practices to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
- Draft privacy notices, statements, and disclosures for websites, mobile apps, panels, surveys, employees, and other services and products.
- Collaborate with Legal, Security, HR/Benefits, Sourcing, and other departments on privacy-related matters.
- Handle other privacy and data protection tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
- J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Active member in good standing of a U.S. state bar.
- Extensive knowledge of global data protection laws with a strong preference for experience in US state laws (e.g., CCPA/CPRA, VCDPA, CDP) and federal laws (e.g., VPPA, COPPA, TCPA).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a privacy/data protection lawyer (privacy as a primary focus), either in-house with a global company or combined with law firm experience.
- Strong judgment, problem-solving skills, and a focus on practical, business-driven outcomes.
- Ability to share knowledge effectively and enable self-service for routine matters within the team.
- Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- A hands-on, practical approach, ready to work closely with legal, business, product, and engineering teams to achieve goals.
Preferred Qualifications:
- In-depth understanding of internet technologies.
- Experience in the market research, digital marketing, and/or ad tech industries.
- Strong commercial contract experience.
- Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) accreditation is a plus.

A reasonable estimate of salary range for a new employee to be offered this role would be between $66,000-$200,000 which would be adjusted based on each employee's geographic location. The position of each employee within a compensation range at Nielsen is dependent on several individual circumstances, such as experience, training, certifications and other business requirements/needs
