Job Duration: 6 Months + Extension Summary: The Packer selects or builds the appropriate containers for a variety of both small and large components/products by selecting the appropriate boxes/containers using detailed work orders to proficiently pack materials for secure dispatching and/or shipment to appropriate distribution areas and/or customers.

Materials & Products Selects, prepares, and/or builds shipping box, pail, or crate as directed by work order. Ensures any required packaging/shipping materials and special handling procedures required for safe national and international shipping are properly utilized.
Components may be fragile, (i.e., large plastic rolls) and/or require special protection and handling. The appropriate packing materials and crating/box must be determined and utilized.
Seals containers or materials using tape, wood, shrink-wrapping, nails, fasteners, power saw, and other hand tools.
Equipment
Utilizes knowledge of routine packing procedures, techniques, and equipment to construct, wrap, and line boxes/cartons/crates using nail guns, staple guns, circular saws, strapper, wrapping machine, and forklift.
Loads materials and products onto package processing equipment and pallets using forklift/hand truck/hoists/lifts.
Measures, weighs and counts products and materials to ensure compliance with work orders and customer expectations.
Working knowledge of computer systems may be required to complete customer orders. Records product, packaging, and order information on specified forms and records.
Procedures
Observe the product to be shipped for quality compliance including product defects, proper labeling, and customer requests.
Sets up product in shipping area on appropriate pallet or box, uses strapping materials on rolls, determines correct stoppers (wood or plastic) to be used, and prepares product for wrapping machine.
Erects a box/crate and computes size, weight, and material requirements, or assembles, lines, and pads pre-constructed shipping materials. Places the individual items and any other specified materials into the carton ensuring effective packing to avoid component damage and effective alignment for reduced shipping cost.
Compares identifying information and counts, weighs, or measures items to be packaged for shipments and for entry in the Queen Anne Drive (QAD) inventory management system.
Wraps products using a wrapping machine while selecting turntable speed, tension, and amount of wrapping required. Completes process using a combination of glue, fasteners, nails, and hand tools.
Labels and addresses the package in a manner consistent with the work order and customer specifications.
Examines and inspects containers, materials, and products in order to ensure that packing specifications are met. Removes any defective products or materials.
Attends annual training and receives yearly certification on HazMat and DOT topics.
May be responsible for loading and unloading shipments or transferring products from transportation vehicles and/or operating fork trucks and other equipment to transport materials to and from transportation vehicles and loading docks, and to store and retrieve materials in warehouses.
Quals--
Education/Experience and Training Time High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent experience.
Fork truck license required.
Must possess basic reading, writing, and math skills
This position requires three to six months' work experience to become proficient in all phases of the job to work independently.
Accountability: Complexity
The Packer follows clearly defined work orders to determine shipping requirements as prioritized by a supervisor.
Utilizes skills in assembling crates and boxes, space utilization techniques, and/or packing contents securely to ensure proper closure and protection while avoiding breakage/spillage.
May be responsible for packing items that require special documentation and custom packing or handling.
Latitude of Judgment
Independently determines the materials, containers, and devices needed to prepare the full range of standard and specialized materials and equipment for custom packing, shipment, and storage.
When problems arise related to discrepancies in the packaged quantity, shipping address, or customer allocations, the supervisor is consulted prior to any determination.
Examines and inspects containers, materials, and products in order to ensure that packing specifications are met.
Supervisory Responsibility
This job does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Physical Demands/Efforts The Packer must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds without assistance.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and smell.
Mental & Visual Demands
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus while reviewing packing labels and adjusting machinery.
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, job folders, and memos required.
Performs basic math calculations, by hand and by computer, to include conversions, weight measurements, volume, and distance.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job within the manufacturing environment, the employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts.
The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne dust.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Various PPE devices & equipment such as gloves, safety shoes, hearing protection, dust masks, and glasses may be required. •
