Stevenson School is a PK-12 co-educational, college-preparatory, boarding and day school with enrollment of 770 students on two campuses in beautiful Central Coast California. The Upper Division campus (Grades 9-12) is located in Pebble Beach. The Lower/Middle Campus (Grades PK-8) is in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea. Stevenson is a mission driven school that aims to help students shape joyful lives while instilling a passion for learning and achievement to prepare them for success in school and beyond.

Stevenson School is seeking a School Counselor, Grades 9-12 to start July 1, 2025. Reporting to the director of counseling, the school counselor is a vital member of the Health and Wellness Team, supporting the overall social emotional health of the community. Focusing on student well-being, the Counselor will identify and respond to student psychological and emotional challenges through short- and long-term counseling, as well as crisis intervention and risk assessment. The school counselor is also a member of Stevenson’s crisis response team. 

The ideal candidate will be an experienced and effective clinician with demonstrated expertise in social-emotional wellness within this age group. The successful candidate will additionally present a positive, flexible, and helpful attitude, understand organizational or independent school culture, be a skilled communicator with a demonstrated history of impeccable judgment, discipline, and collegiality in managing complicated situations with varied constituencies. Experience working with students from historically under-represented populations and from other countries is especially welcome. This is a  full-time, 10-month/year position based at Stevenson’s Pebble Beach campus.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to understand students’ emotional, psychological, and behavioral needs
  • Identify specific issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or learning disabilities
  • Develop individualized treatment plans and monitor student progress towards therapeutic goals, adjusting plans as needed
  • Employ a variety of therapeutic approaches (CBT, DBT, SFT) as well as talk therapy, mindfulness exercises, and coping strategies based on student needs
  • Provide a supportive, empathetic, and safe space for students to share and receive support to work on their area(s) of need
  • Effectively provide crisis management by addressing immediate safety concerns
  • Develop crisis intervention strategies with students, parents, and teachers to ensure student safety
  • Support students in the development of practical skills and techniques to address non-emergent, ongoing issues
  • Provide confidentiality and develop trusting relationships with students while meeting disclosure requirements, guidelines, and protocols to ensure student safety
  • Adhere to ethical guidelines and professional standards
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of counseling sessions
  • Serve as a competent resource to students and their families in need of community-based services, including psychiatric care, mental health evaluations, and specialized treatment
  • Regularly consult with director of counseling, particularly surrounding complex or challenging cases and crisis situations
  • Work with director to develop and implement counseling programs and interventions based on agreed upon best practices, updating policies and procedures as needed
  • Pursue ongoing professional development
  • Other duties as assigned  

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree, LMHS, MA, MSW, or PhD in counseling
  • Licensure in marriage and family therapy, clinical psychology or clinical social work
  • Current certification to practice in the state of California
  • Minimum of five years post-masters clinical work offering direct psychotherapy services to  adolescents and families; 5-10 years preferred
  • Significant experience with children and adolescent population
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships
  • Excellent communication (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build trust
  • Highest level of professionalism and commitment to confidentiality
  • Demonstrated commitment to culturally competent practice, serving the needs of a diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and tact

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in a school setting
  • Fluency in a multiple languages

Estimated salary for this position is $70,000 - $95,000, annually, based on experience. In addition to competitive salary, Stevenson offers a generous benefits package that includes a menu of Anthem health plan options, retirement plan contributions, life insurance, and professional development opportunities. Housing support is available for eligible employees and a monthly fuel stipend is provided for employees who commute to campus.  Lunch in the School’s dining facilities is included daily for all employees when school is in session.
