The “Discovery Tooling” team owns a web based developer tooling ecosystem for all backend engineers working on Pinterest consumer apps like home feed, search, related pins etc.
The tooling ecosystem built by the team will seek to promote ease of development, reliability, debugging and visibility for the entire backend serving stack owned within the team’s parent group - including information retrieval services, recommendation/search platform & services amongst other things.
As an Engineering Manager for the team, you will help build the team, set and deliver on a vision/roadmap through helping mentor and guide the professional/technical development of team members.
What you’ll do:
- Build and lead a team of full stack engineers.
- The team will initially consist of 4 ICs (2 IC15’s, 2 IC14’s) with potential to grow further.
- In this role, you will do roadmap planning twice a year (Pinterest plans on a 6-month basis), run 2-week sprints, and report progress to stakeholders on a monthly basis.
- Provide a vision to the team, drive technical excellence, and partner with key stakeholders to prioritize the team's roadmap. The team partners with peer teams in the infra org and cross-functional product teams (homefeed, search etc) to identify developer enabling capabilities the team can deliver to allow product teams to build with ease. This EM should have enough of a technical base to understand technical problems and solutions to address these problems.
- Mentor and guide the professional and technical development of the members of the team. This includes hiring top talent and providing feedback to existing team members to accelerate their growth. Tactically this EM is expected to run weekly 1:1s with their team and participate in company-wide review processes like mid and year-end reviews.
What we’re looking for:
- Our ideal candidate is a strong people leader with strong technical skills in full stack technologies. The candidate should have demonstrated the following in their previous roles.
- Driving Results - We expect this EM to make a roadmap and drive results with their team. This includes planning, technical breakdowns, tracking and reporting on progress, mitigating risks, etc.
- Plans and Aligns - We expect this EM to generate a roadmap which will involve planning across different teams. This EM should be able to reconcile priorities of their team with priorities of other teams to develop plans with consensus.
- Builds Effective Teams - We expect this EM to maintain and improve overall org health. This includes hiring when there is open headcount, nurturing and growing talent, and identifying and remedying underperformance.
- Technical Knowledge - This is a technical role. We do not expect this EM to code (its a plus if the candidate is eager to get their hands in implementation work) but do expect this EM to be comfortable discussing technical topics with engineers (full stack - spanning web and backend technologies), review and provide feedback on technical design and architecture documents, and to hold a high bar for engineering execution.
