About the role:

We are building the world's most advanced model training and evaluation platform which allows fast experimentation, productization and flexibility for innovation in modeling direction to drive the autonomous vehicle industry forward. At Cruise, we develop state of the art Deep learning models that push the boundaries of scaling and distributed machine learning.

Our models deal with high dimensional (lidar, 3d points) and temporal data (videos) and are on the critical path for AV success. As we scale our commercial fleet to more cities, we have a lot of innovation ahead of us to iterate on the models faster and reduce the cost of our infrastructure.

As Technical Lead Manager for Cruise's Training team, you will be at the heart of ML for the entire company. From computer vision to ranking models, Training platform powers more and more training workloads. As a senior leader, you will collaborate with machine learning engineers and engineering leaders from all of Cruise AI, building a platform that delights our internal customers while maintaining exceptional reliability and flexibility. While partnering closely with these teams, you will have the opportunity to build a reliable, cost efficient and highly scalable training framework that satisfies our training needs, allows faster experimentation and gives us flexibility for innovation in our model direction.

As a technical leader within Cruise, you will build strong, happy and engaged teams helping them to deliver their best work. You will also help each team member grow, coach them, and develop plans that support their career goals.

What you'll be doing:

  • Responsible for growing and developing a small team of engineers
  • Building training platform on top of scalable compute systems
  • Understand business and company goals, develop vision and strategies to support these goals and customer needs
  • Partner with engineering and product leadership across Cruise AI to align Training product roadmap with short-term and long-term needs.
  • Own the innovation in the space of ML platforms, stay up-to-date with the latest developments, and deliver value to our customers
  • Influence key decisions on architecture and implementation of scalable, reliable, and cost-effective engineering solutions
  • Being the bar raiser, pushing the limit on how we built and operate our systems, how we set high standards for performance and how we support our engineers to deliver better experiences for our customers
  • Serve as an embodiment of our values, promote a culture of experimentation and innovation, and a high output team
  • Utilize a combination of open source and in house developed software to meet company goals
  • Set the technical direction for the team, and anticipate strategic and scaling-related challenges
  • Drive software engineering best practices both within your team, and create tooling which encourages these across the company
  • Hire capable and motivated teams that can deliver in agile fashion

What you must have:

  • 3+ years experience tech leading a team of engineers who support scalable production systems
  • 3+ years of experience with building and maintaining machine learning infrastructure
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering roles
  • Experience in distributed training and distributed systems
  • Experience with cloud technologies such as Azure or GCP
  • Experience to drive customer adoption up and scale product
  • Strong execution and project management skills
  • Deep understanding of machine learning concepts
  • Ability to listen to customers, understand their needs proactively and establish a vision, define a roadmap, and deliver solutions
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to work closely with product and program management, data science, engineering, and operations.
  • Bachelor's degree in CS, or equivalent real world experience

Bonus points!

  • Previous technical background in Computer Vision Domain, or Computer Vision Infrastructure
  • Experience writing Go, or a desire to learn
  • Experience working with Docker and Kubernetes, especially for running GPU workloads
  • Experience writing modern production C++ and Python applications

The salary range for this position is $241,700 - $355,400. Compensation will vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. You may also be offered a bonus, restricted stock units, and benefits. These ranges are subject to change.
