Our Clothing Studio is accepting applications for a part-time Clothing, Craft, and Textile Specialist. In this role, you will work as part of the Studio Sewing Team to construct, fit, alter, and maintain historical reproduction garments, textiles, uniforms, and special program costumes for interpretive and exhibitive purposes at The Henry Ford. You will have an opportunity to be responsible for some clothing design and pattern creation, or pattern manipulation work, as pertains to the assigned historical clothing or costume project. Performs garment fittings, alterations, creates stock garments, and non-clothing textile construction, including, but not limited to cabinet covers, curtains, and accessories such as hats. Assists with wardrobe, cleaning, organization of stock, and maintenance functions relating to the care of clothing, textiles, and shop equipment.

Essential Responsibilities

• Constructs historical reproduction and theatrical costume garments, accessories, and other textile-related items. Responsible for minor research, design, and pattern work within the limitations of the established outlines for the assignment.

• Takes and records body size measurements, conducts garment fittings, assists dressing presenters (including historical undergarments) in a timely and professional manner on both sexes. Understands, implements, and educates employees on the clothing standards of the department.

• Responsible for punctual completion of alterations and projects.

• Follows an established system of organization and cares for an inventory of fabric, trims, garments and accessories (including laundry duties).

• Maintains written records involved in the production of garments, accessories, and non-clothing sewing and crafting projects.

• Acts as a team player and maintains a safe work environment by following the established policies and procedures of the department.

• Performs other duties and activities as assigned.


Your Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.

• Basic computer skills, and the ability to operate a basic digital camera.

• Experience in all phases of garment development, construction, and alteration.

• Hand sewing knowledge and experience.

• Experience with standard sewing tools and equipment, including power sewing machines.

• Must have flexibility and availability on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

• Must be self-motivated and professional with excellent attention to detail.

• Must possess good oral and written communications skills.
