The Diversity and Inclusion Internship Program at The Henry Ford is a cohort-based program that offers professional development, mentorship, and networking opportunities. For Winter 2025, internships will last 15 weeks, projected to begin on January 21st and conclude on May 2nd.

The Historic Operating Machinery (HOM) Intern can expect to work hybrid, with some of your time being spent remotely. Based on specific project needs, there are times when you and the team will work on-site at The Henry Ford’s campus in Dearborn, MI.

How will we work together?

The Historic Operating Machinery Intern will primarily work with the manager of HOM, but will collaborate with the rest of the team from time to time. The HOM manager will be the project lead who will mentor and guide you throughout your time with us.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Analyze existing code and electronic circuits for the purposes of documentation
  • Port code written in pBASIC for PIC microcontrollers to C for AVR/Arduino microcontrollers
  • Produce usage and repair manuals for in-house use, based on existing documentation and collaboration with staff

What should you have?

The HOM Intern should have a passion for sharing knowledge, and experience with both the software and hardware sides of simple embedded systems.

Competitive candidates will be:

  • Proficient with BASIC and C-based microcontroller programming languages
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and/or Publisher
  • Prepared to submit examples of user manuals, repair procedures, or other relevant technical documents created by the candidate
  • Comfortable working in a variety of spaces and environments
  • Willing to learn and take on challenging projects
  • Passionate about technical communication and procedural thinking
  • Curious
  • Familiar with mechanical and electrical concepts and terminology
  • Able to give and receive constructive feedback

Here are a few extras that could enhance your candidacy, but are not required:

  • Proficient with KiCAD or similar electronic schematic CAD software
  • Experience with Fusion 360 CAD software
  • Experience designing electronic circuits and writing code
  • Passion for museums and education
