The Department of Marine Resources is seeking a Marine Resource Scientist IV for a managerial position headquartered in West Boothbay Harbor that is responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of the Nearshore Marine Resources Program in the Bureau of Public Health and Aquaculture. 

 

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: Chief responsibilities of this position are to oversee the Nearshore Marine Resources Program which includes assessment and management of bivalve shellfish, seaweed, marine worms and other molluscan species. 

As director of the program this position coordinates the sampling activities of the group and directs research programs to obtain scientific information needed for management decisions. The position is the lead on co-management of bivalve shellfish with participating municipalities, oversees the environmental permit review process for the Department and leads research and monitoring of climate change impacts. The position advises the Bureau Director and Commissioner on the development of regulations and legislation. The position designs and submits research proposals to state and federal agencies to obtain funding, conducts research and analyses, and writes and reviews reports.

This is a supervisory position responsible for coaching and evaluating the performance of subordinates. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of fisheries research, assessment, and management practices; knowledge of statistics and sampling design; demonstrated experience of teamwork in a large organization; excellent written and oral communication skills; supervisory experience; experience in grant writing; collaborative research experience; and the ability to plan, implement, and evaluate marine research.

This position is eligible for some remote work capabilities dependent upon State and Department telework policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Extensive education, training, or experience in a scientific, technical, engineering discipline, or a directly related field with demonstrated work experience in the field of marine resource research and management or another related field which includes supervision and coordination of research and support functions.
