Purpose of the Position
We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Backend Platform Tribe.
The mission of the Backend Platform tribe is to provide shared services and common APIs for our product teams to let them focus on product features. We always strive to increase efficiency of development process and reduce technical debt. The tribe consists of two teams: one is specialised on developing java-microservices, while the other is focused on refactoring the PHP-monolith application.
You will be responsible for leading 10-12 software engineers (divided into two teams), spread across multiple locations including UK, Germany, Poland, and Romania.
In this role you will coach and mentor your team members, empower them to act autonomously, establish clear ownership and build strong knowledge centres. You will coordinate across teams and departments as needed to accomplish goals, including, but not limited to, Product, DevOps, UX, InfoSec, and more. You are passionate about building high-performing teams and helping your team members grow. You own the delivery of commitments and are always looking to improve productivity.
You will foster a safe environment where decisions are delegated and can be communicated effectively. In this role we don’t expect you to be hands-on but we expect you to be technical. This means that you have a strong technical background in software building and you can help your team unblock delivery if necessary.
Key tasks:
- Coach and mentor engineers, fostering their growth and career development.
- Track individual development plans and provide regular feedback.
- Drive recruitment efforts and ensure successful onboarding for new team members.
- Collaborate closely with the Product Manager to define team objectives and OKRs.
- Enable the team to take ownership of the software delivery lifecycle and drive continuous improvement.
- Facilitate discussions and decision-making processes within the team, resolving conflicts when necessary.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing and promote a culture of learning within the team.
- Manage team capacity and availability, approving absence requests as needed.
- Contribute to the strategic direction of the Engineering Management group.
- Contribute to backend architechture decisions and design choices.
- Conduct performance reviews if necessary.
Skills and Expertise:
- You have at least 8 years of experience in the Software Engineering industry.
- You have at least 3 years of experience as an Engineering Manager or any other engineering leadership position.
- You have a background of hands-on experience in any modern relevant programming language (Java, PHP, C#, GoLang, Python, etc.) but are now focused on people management.
- You have a good understanding of fundamental design principles, data modelling, API design, design patterns, SOLID principles. You are generally passionate about software building.
- You can understand, explain and discuss software architecture designs, diagrams and documentation. You can contribute to creation of new software designs in collaboration with other team members.
- You consider long-term technical strategy, economic viability, interactions between components, compatibility issues, reuse by other systems or teams.
- You use data to inform your decision making and drive change, and you take meaningful steps to introduce monitoring to improve the quality of decision making.
