What We’re Looking For

Capital B Gary seeks a Business and Economic Development Reporter to write stories delving into the city's economic landscape, exploring revitalization efforts, business growth, and the challenges of economic disparity. This beat will explore how distressed infrastructure and neighborhoods are being transformed, assess the financial landscape and job opportunities for residents, and examine the effects of community change.

This role is crucial for uncovering stories in Gary about innovation, scrutinizing political decisions affecting economic development, and highlighting community-driven solutions to challenges. We're seeking someone who can deeply connect with a wide range of community members, listen attentively to their questions and concerns, and understand their needs. They should be a reporter who embraces the opportunity to interact with the community and have them shape their work.

This position reports to the Gary Editor.

Salary Range: $60,000-$72,000

Location: Gary, Indiana.

The Role

• Craft impactful stories that examine Gary's economic and business development and economic disparities.
• Engage with Gary community members, listening to their stories, questions, and concerns to guide your reporting focus.
• Work with the Gary Editor and the Community Engagement Editor to craft reporting strategies that reflect community input and align with Capital B’s mission.
• Contribute to special reporting projects, working collaboratively with team members.
• Support audience initiatives, such as community events and outreach efforts, to promote story visibility and impact.
• Maintain a commitment to ethical and accurate reporting standards.

What You’ll Bring

• At least two years of journalism experience.
• Proven ability in storytelling that highlights Black experiences and perspectives.
• A deep commitment to and understanding of Gary’s communities.
• An eagerness to cover stories through both a hyperlocal lens and a broader citywide perspective.
• Flexibility to adapt reporting focus based on community feedback.
• Excellent research, interviewing, and empathetic listening skills.
• Proficiency in AP style and grammar.
• Ability to produce clear, engaging, and accessible stories for a diverse readership.
• A commitment to continuous learning, creative collaboration, and community-driven storytelling.
