The Engineering & Technical Services Technician position is based in Toronto and typically reports directly to the Maintenance, Commissioning or Engineering Supervisor, dependent on business requirements. Their primary focus is providing technical support to the Engineering & Technical Services Division, which will include both field and office support. The technician will be enrolled into a 4- year Engineering & Technical Services trainee program and will be evaluated throughout the program prior to advancing to the next level. The technician will rotate through various streams of the division during the 4-year term, providing the technician with quality exposure and experience within various aspects of the division and industry. Areas of focus include, but are not limited to:
- Substation maintenance
- Substation commissioning
- Engineering services
- Distribution design services
- Panel builds & wiring
- Responsible for the maintenance, installation, and repair of medium/high voltage substation equipment
- Maintain or commission power transmission, substation, and distribution equipment – i.e., Protection and control circuits, power transformers, circuit breakers, HV switches and breaker, AIS/GIS switchgear etc.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Relay testing and calibration of both electronic and electromechanical relays as well as testing various protection schemes
- Prepare detailed project reports by collecting, summarizing, analysing, and interpreting information
- Perform tasks using computer assisted tests, analysis, and design engineering software
- Prepare, review, and edit technical drawings of electrical components and systems to ensure the application, installation and operations conform to required standards and customer requirements
- Protection panel building, wiring, and testing
- Assist engineering services with designing and drafting for various projects – Includes schematic drawings, protection settings, power system studies, documentation packages, etc.
- Design support for new construction, rehabilitation, and relocation of overhead and underground infrastructure at distribution voltage levels.
- Develop and prepare design deliverables from preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, specification sheets, and other data
- Prepare construction drawings for proposed distribution system design (overhead and underground)
- Communicate with site staff for any design related inquiries
- Prepare as-built construction drawings
- Conduct field reviews and surveys for design input purposes
- Visit site as required to assist design team and technical data collection

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering
- Registered E.I.T or OACETT member is considered an asset
- Exposure to the electrical construction industry is considered an asset but not required

- Strong computer skills (AutoCAD, MS Office, etc.)
- Troubleshooting mindset – will be responsible for in depth troubleshooting of electrical systems
- Mechanical skills considered an asset

- Will be required to work in an outdoor substation environment
- Flexibility to work on-call hours to respond to customer emergencies
- Physically fit to lift and carry electrical test equipment
- Willing and able to travel in and around Southern Ontario
- Valid Ontario G or Class 5 Driver’s License
