The goal of the Risk and Underwriting Department is to mitigate financial loss to the company through proactive merchant review and analysis. This position reports to the Regional Director, Risk & Underwriting Operations.
The Credit Risk Underwriter will proactively review incoming merchant applications for Fraud and Credit Risk and analyze said referrals to qualify their credit worthiness.
The Candidate will utilize a host of tools to review and analyze merchant activity, business structure, and financial exposure. This information will be used to decision individual accounts.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
· Review merchant applications and determine if main activity falls outside of approved parameters.
· Identify, investigate and report potentially suspicious applications.
· Perform all necessary KYC/KYB functions in accordance with scheme and regulatory rules.
· Make decisions regarding the disposition of merchant processing activity to mitigate losses to the company.
· Assist in the mitigation of losses by ensuring activities are an accurate representation of merchant’s business model.
· Provide various reporting to management.
· Ability to work evenings and weekends.
· Conduct detailed credit & risk analysis of applying merchant accounts to determine creditworthiness as well as identifying potential risks.
· Demonstrate strong methodical skills in analyzing data, drawing meaningful conclusions, preparing written summary of results in accordance with department procedures & making holistic business recommendations.
· Maintain communication & collaboration with partners, merchants & co-workers.
· Process applications efficiently & with analytical thinking to reduce & streamline the workload of the underwriting department within a reasonable time frame.
· Answer internal and external inquiries regarding Underwriting issues.
Functional Proficiencies
· Bachelors in finance or the equivalent in relevant experience and training.
· 2 years’ experience in risk management and/or underwriting.
· Strong analytical skills.
· Experience payments or bank card industry.
· Knowledge of card scheme rules, regulations, and registration requirements
· Good practical knowledge of Excel.
· Good business sense.
· Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
