Locations: Various – Middle East/Haiti/Jamaica 

Role type: This is not a full-time position – it is contract-based and deployment in either region will be for short-term periods based on need, and as agreed by the relevant donor entity.

About the Combat Medic

ARK is looking to build a roster to recruit experienced Combat Medic Trainers to deliver tactical medicine courses for military and police organizations in the Middle East and Haiti. The training will be delivered to TCCC (Tactical Combat Casualty Care) standard or equivalent and will focus on casualty stabilisation and the administering of field treatments intended to support life pending medical evacuation. 

 

Haiti-focussed TCCC trainers will report to the ARK Operations Manager responsible for supporting capacity building of the Haiti National Police (HNP), supported by the Government of Canada. In the medium to longer term, ARK will select a lead trainer from among the successful candidates who will handle setting and monitoring the technical standards for TCCC techniques and methods of instructions. Middle East focussed trainers will report to regional project managers. 

What you'll be doing

  • Instruct tactical medicine courses for military and response teams police personnel, based on Department of Defence TCCC-All Service Members (ASM) protocols, with the addition of operationally relevant tactical evacuation care protocols. The assessed skill stations include:  
  • Tourniquet application 
  • Wound packing (including haemostatic dressings) 
  • Pressure dressings 
  • Recovery position 
  • Nasopharyngeal airways. 
  • Deliver train the trainer (TTT) courses, to qualify military and police personnel to  teach the basic tactical medicine courses. 
  • Supervise and ensure appropriate Committee of TCCC (CoTCCC) standards are upheld during tactical exercises and simulations for the Care Under Fire part of the courses. 
  • Supervise medical scenario training, to ensure the conduct of the training is safe, realistic, and beneficial to skills development, following established reality-based training protocols. 
  • Ensure that graduates of the tactical medicine program have the appropriate Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) components, properly set up on their equipment per unit equipment standardization. 
  • Remain aware of any CoTCCC guideline updates and adjust instructional materials appropriately. 
  • Support the military/police force to integrate and institutionalize medical plans as a part of their routine operations, particularly during direct action (DA) mission sets, as required. 

Requirements

Essential: 

  • A history of providing formal medical training, either in a military or law enforcement setting OR a recognized and relevant certification course (Stop the Bleed, TCCC, Tactical Emergency Casualty Care [TECC], International Trauma Life Support [ITLS], Prehospital Trauma Life Support [PHTLS]) 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of contraindications for certain medical interventions, such as nasopharyngeal airways. 
  • Thorough understanding of current CoTCCC guidelines and access to the most recent updates to guidelines. 
  • High degree of competency in the use of all medical tools and adjuncts used in the TCCC-ASM course, as well as skill station training aids. 
  • Experience in supervising and assessing medical skill stations. 
  • Experience in supervising and assessing medical scenario training. 
  • Familiarity with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and the proper use of PPE within established best practices of medical and tactical environments. 
  • Experience working in insecure environments, such as conflict areas, tactical police operations, or civil disturbances situations. 
  • Haiti: French or English language ability is essential, with knowledge of both desirable. Créole interpreters will be retained to assist the trainers. 

 

Desirable: 

  • Qualified as a TCCC operator via a formal military or law enforcement training program. 
  • Experience as a TCCC operator or combat medic in a conflict zone. 
  • Familiarity with IFAK standards and components, for military and law enforcement personnel. 
  • Experience working in low-light task-oriented environments, either with white light or night observation devices. 
  • Haiti: Proficiency in Haiti Créole. 
  • Middle East: Proficiency in Arabic will be an advantage, although expert local Interpreters are available.
