SUPPORT STAFF POSITION
SPECIAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT
Position Summary:
The Elementary School Special Education Instructional Assistant will support the daily activities, planning, and supervision of students in the classroom setting, under the guidance and supervision of the Special Education team. Special Education Instructional Assistants are responsible for safeguarding students and agree to abide by all child protection policies and procedures, and agree to participate in all child protection training as mandated by the school.
Primary Responsibilities:

Maintain a safe, nurturing learning environment;

Assist Special Education teacher when requested in daily classroom activity planning and supervision;

Assist Special Education teacher with the creation of instructional materials and resources;
-
Work with individual students or small groups of students to implement individualized programs addressing academic, social, and daily living/life skills as prescribed by the Special Education teacher and other specialists;

Guide children in working and playing harmoniously with other children in a variety of settings;
-
Assist with daily living activities, including personal care and toileting, as required;
-
Assist with group activities in the classroom and supervision of children during recess and play period;

Participate in in-service training programs as assigned;
-
Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully certified teachers;

Required Qualifications:

Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent;
-
Exceptional English speaking skills;
-
The ability to inspire children;
-
Excellent knowledge of the relevant subject(s);

Excellent classroom management;
-
A good sense of humor;
-
A clearly visible love for children;
-
Full understanding and support of the school's philosophy;
-
Flexibility and ability to take initiative;
-
Experience with technology including Google Suite, and ability to quickly master new applications;

Able to prioritize and multitask;
Terms of Employment:
This position is classified as a non-sponsored support staff position. General working hours are from 7:45 am - 3:45 pm, Monday through Thursday and 7:45 am - 12:45 pm (on site) & 2:30 pm - 3:45 pm (remote/flexible) on Fridays. In some cases, flexibility with work hours is requested to meet the needs of the role.
