The Output team is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to continue to build and evolve our Co-Producer music intelligence platform, a suite of cloud capabilities powering rich new music experiences for our users. The ideal candidate will have deep experience as a backend software engineer ranging from distributed systems and micro-services architecture to CI/CD, SRE, and software engineering best practices. This candidate will also have experience rebuilding backend stacks while ‘the plane is in flight’. We’re looking for someone who has intrinsic motivation, is detail-oriented, technically savvy, and energized to chart the course for our Discovery future tech platform capabilities roadmap.
How you'll add value:
- Build, evolve, deploy, monitor, and maintain backend services to power critical user experiences with focus on high availability, low latency, and scalability
- Provide backend services technical leadership for your cross-functional team and large complex projects - be able to lead technical scoping, architecture and system design
- Actively participate in scrum process - work breakdown, grooming, estimation, planning and execution of software development work as part of a scrum team
- Provide architectural leadership for projects - Understand critical tradeoffs and prioritize paying down tech debt along the way
- Build, operate and maintain infrastructure, tools, and CI/CD deployment pipeline. Take operational responsibility for the services that are owned by your team
- Be a role model for the team on SW engineering best practices, leading by example
- Lead technical projects from start to finish - ability to apply lean process
- Strong judgment to drive project trade-off decisions between complexity and lead time
- Advocate for making quality implicit in our engineering processes and practices
What you'll need to be successful in this role:
- 6+ years experience delivering impactful, high-quality backend software applications for large scale production systems
- Broad experience and exposure to backend architectural patterns, technologies, frameworks, languages and tools. Aversion to monoliths - tendency towards micro-services architecture when appropriate
- Solid SRE background and high value placed on uptime of production systems
- Experience with the following technologies, frameworks, languages and tools:
- Domains such as deep learning and music information retrieval, auth, identity, search, queues, etc.
- Familiarity with taking machine learning models from research domain to production
- RESTful services, API design best practices, distributed systems, micro services, and other architectural patterns
- Developing and maintaining restful services in NodeJS, Python, Ruby, etc
- Database technologies such as MySQL, Postgres, NoSQL, GraphQL, etc
- Configuring and using cloud hosted infrastructure like GCP, Heroku, or AWS
- A few of the following - containerization/Docker, load balancers, caching, CDNs, etc
- Test driven development including unit, integration and regression testing, and automation for backend services and APIs (Datadog, RUM, synthetics, dashboards, logging)
- DNS configuration, security best practices, migrating to the cloud, etc
- Mature backend services CI/CD processes and deployment best practices
- Experience with feature flagging, A|B testing, progressive rollout and safe deployment techniques
- Experience working with cross-functional product teams
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills - Ability to propose solutions and back them up with sound reasoning
- Passion for democratizing music making and empowering creative music makers highly preferred

- In accordance with California law, the salary range for this role if filled within Los Angeles is $120,000 - $180,000. The range for the position in other geographies may vary based on market differences. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law
