Originally founded in 1991 as Harlem RBI, DREAM has grown to annually serve more than 2,500 youth across East Harlem and the South Bronx through a network of seven PreK-12, extended-day, extended-year DREAM Charter Schools and community sports-based youth development programs. Reporting to the Dean of SEL and Community and the Senior Director of Family and Community Engagement, the Family and Community Engagement Manager will be responsible for developing, promoting, and maintaining the Family Engagement Program at DREAM’s East Harlem Elementary and Middle School. This is a full-time, 12-month school-based position, and an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about creating authentic partnerships with families and the community to drive DREAM’s mission forward.

Responsibilities

  • Partnerships and Family Support:
  • Serve as a liaison between families and Elementary and Middle school staff, addressing concerns and fostering positive, trusting relationships;
  • Support schools and families in getting students to school on time, every day;
  • Manage a targeted caseload of families to ensure students and families are connected to people, resources and services, to overcome challenging circumstances and achieve their goals;
  • In partnership with the Mental Health Provider and Student Support Teams, connect families to resources and services for health, food, employment, housing, education, etc.;
  • Attend case conferences to coordinate care for complex situations, prepare meeting minutes, and ensure accurate documentation of family status changes;
  • Plan and lead home visits, ensuring meaningful connections with families;
  • Recruit families to join the DREAM Family Action Council, and serve as Classroom Captains, Family Volunteers, and Family Ambassadors.

  • Program Management: 
  • Lead school community in actively engaging families in high-quality family programming that is empowering, informative and fun;  
  • Develop a robust calendar of program events and activities to promote family involvement, including Family Visits, Family Cafés, Family Conferences, special events, and more;
  • Partner with school leaders and staff to involve families and community partners in school initiatives through regular check-ins, committee meetings, data sharing, and professional development opportunities;
  • Manage family volunteer programming, including recruiting and training family volunteers, and managing volunteer projects, committees and events; 
  • Manage and support the growth and development of the DREAM Family Action Council (DFAC);
  • Collect, analyze, and share family data including program attendance, family satisfaction surveys, family engagement rates, and the ways in which this data affects youth achievement;
  • Support school outreach, recruitment and retention efforts.

  • Communications:
  • Drive production of DREAM family communication including fliers, emails, texts, robo calls, letters, and handouts;
  • Gather content and publish a weekly family newsletter; 
  • Collect information about recreational and educational opportunities for DREAM families and students and publicize them to families.

  • Additional duties related to the running of the Elementary and Middle Schools as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Social Work, Community Organizing, or Education preferred;
  • Bilingual English/Spanish required;
  • Experience working in K-12 schools serving a diverse and low-income community, required;
  • 3+ years of experience with project and people management, event planning, and group facilitation, strongly preferred;
  • Experience working in customer service, preferred; 
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission, goals, educational philosophy and activities of DREAM Charter School, as described in the school’s charter;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Outcome-orientation and track record of driving results with families
  • Excellent organizational and writing skills;
  • Ability to develop outreach materials to engage and connect with families;
  • Ability to develop and organize large events;
  • Ability to organize and support volunteers;
  • Strong relationship skills required;
  • Deep care and passion  for educational justice and social change.

Compensation

  • DREAM offers a competitive salary commensurate with relevant experience with the potential for an annual performance-based increase. The incoming salary range for this position is $60,000  to $70,000 per year. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary closer to the start of the range depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role. All staff are eligible for annual performance-based increases. Because we value staff tenure in each role, we do not currently cap salary ranges.
