Overview:

Improvix Technologies is seeking a Senior Data Governance Specialist to support the Department of State's Data Analytics and Assessment (DAA) unit. This role is part of a multi-year effort to build out the Diplomatic Technology (DT) bureau’s data capabilities across a diverse and growing ecosystem of tools and technologies. The objective is to increase data utilization across the DT bureau in accordance with the DOS Enterprise Data Strategy (EDS) through fostering a data-centric culture, increasing access to reliable data, and defining/implementing data quality standards and policies.

The Governance Specialist will play a pivotal role in enabling effective use of data assets for informed decision-making through defining, implementing, and coordinating data standards and oversight.

 

Job Duties:

• Collaborate with the data architect and technical staff to develop and document a data governance and management framework for DT.
• Define and inventory DT data assets in a centralized data catalog with metadata management.
• Organize and implement policies, procedures, and standards for DT’s data assets.
• Implement and measure mechanisms for improving data quality and integrity throughout DT’s portfolio of systems and platforms.
• Collaborate with stakeholders and system owners throughout DOS, including members of the Enterprise Data Council (EDC), to provide input on enterprise-level data policy and apply bureau-level implementations.
• Document data lineage and relationships across business, technical, and system layers.
• Document and mitigate data-related risks and compliance standards.

·        Ensure alignment with the Department of State’s bureau-level data strategy and chief data officer initiatives.

 

Qualifications:

 

• Bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, or related field.
• 5+ years of experience in data management, governance, and quality.
• Experience defining and implementing a data governance framework with best practices.
• Experience developing a data catalog and inventorying data assets.
• Experience collaborating with data stewards and stakeholders to define, implement, and measure data governance practices.
• Understanding of data architecture best practices and design patterns.
• Ability to take initiative on broad directions (does not require continuous hands-on management).
• Ability to translate technical concepts and terminology to non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to facilitate meetings as necessary.

 

Preferred Skills:

 

• Experience working with Alation for data management, governance, and cataloging.
• Familiarity with the DOS Enterprise Data Strategy, DT ecosystem, and data-related initiatives.
• Familiarity with Azure data-related services, Databricks, Splunk, or similar tools.
