Position Summary:

The University is seeking a skilled and reliable Locksmith/Maintenance Worker II to join our Facilities team. This position is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining locks and related hardware, cutting keys, and performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled building repair and construction tasks. The ideal candidate will be an experienced locksmith with a strong foundation in general building maintenance and a commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our campus.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintain, repair, and service all locks and keying systems across campus.
  • Develop and maintain a key inventory system, including detailed records by door, lock, pinning, and building.
  • Create and manage a computer database supporting the key inventory and floor plans identifying campus doors and related hardware.
  • Produce and issue keys, as approved by Department Heads, the Maintenance & Grounds Manager, and the Director of Facilities.
  • Install, adjust, repair, and maintain locks, panic hardware, door closers, and other locking devices.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, new locking mechanisms, and security technologies.
  • Cut various types of keys, including duplication, by codes, and maintain knowledge of code systems for accurate key cutting.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of keys, blanks, and other locksmith supplies, ordering as needed from suppliers.
  • Inspect buildings and grounds for necessary repairs and preventative maintenance; generate work orders as needed.
  • Assist in the maintenance of walkways, entrances, and stairs, including snow removal, salting, and general winter maintenance.
  • Perform general maintenance tasks, including flooring repairs, plumbing, electrical work, painting, carpentry, window replacement, and appliance repairs.
  • Operate and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles needed to complete assigned tasks.
  • Collaborate with other maintenance staff and perform additional duties as assigned by the Assistant Facilities Director or Director of Facilities.

Typical Schedule:

  • Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.
  • As a non-exempt position, the schedule may vary based on job responsibilities and department needs. Flexibility is required, and availability outside of regular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends, may be necessary.
  • Overtime must be pre-approved by the Director of Facilities.
  • As an essential personnel role, the employee may be required to work during severe weather or emergencies, and hours may change based on campus needs.

Position Requirements/Skills/Abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with relevant vocational training.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in locksmithing and building trades, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency in locksmithing skills, including familiarity with all types of locking mechanisms and industry trends.
  • Strong skills in general building trades such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.
  • Knowledge and experience with a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record required; certification as a locksmith is preferred.
  • Must be able to read, write, and comprehend English, as well as perform basic mathematical computations.
  • Ability to remain calm and efficient in emergency situations.
  • Ability to participate in a rotating on-call program with pager or cell phone availability.
  • Ability to respond to the University at various hours, including nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check is required.
