Our Industrial Automation sector has a bold vision for future acquisitions. We are in search of an experienced Head of M&A to strategically support our global initiatives, with a primary emphasis on cultivating robust relationships that facilitate acquisition opportunities in emerging and rapidly expanding markets. 

Location: Hybrid role located in the Chicago area.

Role purpose

To strengthen the global coverage of the Industrial Automation business development group and provide the intellect and drive to accelerate our growth. To provide the execution capability in the areas of M&A screening, relationship building, transaction origination, due diligence, deal execution and integration delivery. The position will report to the VP of Business Development, a member of the Industrial Automation leadership team.

Key accountabilities:

  • Collaborate with sector leadership and business development team to develop and manage a global pipeline of M&A targets.
  • Proactively engage with the owners of potential M&A targets, devising and implementing strategies to unlock opportunities and advance them for execution.
  • Assess and validate the customer value proposition of targets through direct engagement with clients.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with third-party M&A advisory firms and due diligence providers to ensure a continuous flow of new opportunities, supplementing in-house origination efforts.
  • Drive the execution of the M&A cycle, overseeing all phases from origination and initial analysis to non-binding bid preparation, due diligence, negotiation of final documentation and completion mechanics. 
  • Lead the development of acquisition cases in partnership with the Industrial Automation leadership team. 

Team structure:

  • Reporting to the VP of Business Development, Industrial Automation
  • Part of a broader business development function across the IMI Group comprising Group Corporate Development Director and Business development/M&A resources in other Sectors

Required skills and experience:

  • Knowledge of industrial automation applications and an aptitude to understand the criticality of a customer problem that an M&A target is solving.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain relationships with potential M&A targets and unlock through pro-active origination.
  • Track record of coordinating and implementing due diligence for potential transactions. 
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience with creating investment proposals, along with supporting strategic and financial analysis, for review by executive management.
  • Strong financial modelling and M&A valuation skills.
  • Resilience and adaptability in an environment of transformative change. 
  • Openness to developing within the role that might require pivoting of scope and priorities.
  • Willingness to contribute and collaborate within a relatively flat management and team structure.
  • Experience with supporting and facilitating negotiations of transaction terms and legal documentation with the support of external advisors.
  • Strong financial modelling and M&A valuation skills.
  • High proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
