Who we are

Blackbullion is an award winning edtech company transitioning into fintech. We work with over 60 clients across the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Ireland providing financial education, access to funding and tools to manage money to students around the world. So far in 2024 we've scaled up our team, launched our app and started our Series A funding round.

Who you are

We’re looking for a mid-level full-stack engineer to join our engineering team. You'll be working on the development of our student and client facing web platform which delivers learning content, funding opportunities and analytics to our users. This is primarily a backend role but you'll have the opportunity to work on features end-to-end.

In short, you're a product-focused engineer interested in building out experiences that truly make a difference for our growing student and client userbase. You'll be taking ownership of new features, scaling up our existing platform and collaborating with the product team on day-to-day development.

Tech stack

The web platform stack includes:

• Our backend uses PHP and Laravel
• The frontend uses React and Typescript
• Our primary database uses MySQL
• Our infrastructure is hosted on AWS and we use various services like EC2, S3, SQS and Lambda
• We have a serverless stack using AWS Lambda and Serverless framework

Interview process

1. Initial call with the CTO (30 mins)
2. Take home coding challenge
3. Final interview with the CTO, Senior Product Manager and a senior engineer (1 hour)

Requirements

Essentials

• 3+ years backend experience (ideally with a statically typed language) + relevant frontend experience
• Experience with source control, CI & CD
• Competent in writing robust unit tests

Bonus points

• Experience working in a startup environment and/or product-led company
• SQL and database design experience
• Experience working with common AWS services (S3, EC2, Lambda)
• Experience working with financial data
