Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.
Lead Electrical Test Engineer – Medium Voltage reporting to the Director of Power Systems in the SPARC team at CFS. Responsible to lead and coordinate system and component level electrical testing and validation while ensuring compliance to standards and safety aspects of the designs that meets specifications, project timelines within budget allocated.
This team member will:
- Lead electrical component level and system level testing and validation for fusion power
- Lead coordination and planning of testing required for the equipment under test (EUT) with cross functional engineering and physics teams
- Develop test plans, test procedures, test sequencing, factory acceptance test (FAT) procedures for medium voltage (1000V to 13.8kV) and low voltage (up to 1000V) systems at CFS
- Develop test methods to lead proof of concept testing with the use of prototype material to de-risk technical issues
- Collaborate with cross functional teams by participating in design reviews, define functional test requirements and pass/fail criteria
- Produce test reports, engineering reports and FAT reports for all component and system level tests. Complete peer reviews of the reports prior to release
- Ability to debug any issues during test / validation and coordination with relevant engineering teams to find a solution
- Apply best electrical safety practices & compliance standards (IEC, NEC, UL, CSA) into the test plans and procedures and subsequent testing and validation
The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical engineering or relevant field
- 5+ years of experience in electrical design and system level V&V (validation & verification) integration testing
- Proven track record with hands on experience in testing and validation of medium voltage electrical systems
- Ability to lead all test engineering activities from conception of idea till implementation in a fast-paced environment
- Hands on experience with test equipment – oscilloscopes, Ohm meters, Hi Potter, DMM, Rogowski Coils etc.
- Ability to review and understand electrical schematics, layout drawings, technical specifications
- Experience with application of compliance standards to the designs (IEC, NEC, UL, CSA)
- Experience in design, build & deployment of text fixtures for electrical system tests.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to conduct design reviews, organize / present results to both expert and non-technical audiences
- Results driven and ability to embrace and convince stakeholders on a change in project direction in pursuit of a high-quality product release
Additional experience and/or qualifications:
- Experience with specifying test equipment, identifying vendors and work with procurement on purchase and delivery
- Experience in practical application of electrical engineering skills to construction, manufacturing, testing and field installations
- Experience with simulation and analysis software (PSPICE, MATLAB/ Simulink etc.) to perform static and transient simulations
- Experience in problem solving, root cause analysis and field containment actions
- Experience with scaling up independent systems to a larger system to meet higher power requirements
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
- Perform activities such as typing, stooping, standing, climbing or sitting for extended periods of time
- Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
- Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics
