POSITION SUMMARY:
This role will be based in Japan and report to the Boku Head of Risk and Compliance based in the United Kingdom. The successful candidate will lead the enhancement of the governance, risk and compliance framework with focus on Japanese local regulations at Boku, as the business continues to develop and innovate. The role will furthermore focus on ensuring Boku’s Japanese entity, which is a full member of the JCA and licensed by METI as a payment acquirer.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- On-boarding new merchants and regular review of existing ones.
- Manage on-going regulatory requests and filings, including responding to audits and inquiries in Japan.
- Stay up to date with any relevant regulatory changes in Japan and ensure those requirements are properly presented in the internal company policies and procedures.
- Writing and maintaining compliance manual and leading training/workshops to ensure compliance is maintained.
- Support internal and external partner teams in Japanese regulatory matters.
- Establish positive working relationships with relevant Japanese regulators.
- Manage both internal and external compliance audits and reviews (including any audits or inspections by competent regulators).
- Manage any payment license renewals in Japan.
- Establish and maintain strong working relationships with business stakeholders, to ensure the risk and compliance framework is relevant and workable, particularly with respect to risk appetite across the business.
- Support the Group Head of Risk and Compliance to ensure relevant processes, controls and frameworks are audited.
- Assist in corporate secretarial matters and liaisons with external counsels and consultants, to meet compliance requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous work experience at in-house legal and/or compliance department in a financial institution such as a bank, fintech or payments firm
- Experience working with the Japanese regulatory authorities.
- Strong interpersonal skills and track record of positive stakeholder management with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and business cultures.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-changing business environment.
- Able to translate regulatory requirements into workable business solutions.
- Advanced business level of English and a native Japanese speaker
DESIRED TRAITS
- Previous in-house experience in a technology-led environment.
- Previous exposure to the payments industry.
- Knowledge and work experience of METI, ISA related payment regulation and operations in Japan is strongly preferred.
- Legal or paralegal experience in contract management and review is a strong plus.
