Job Overview:

The Middle and Upper School Dean of Faculty is a pivotal organizational leader, and a senior-level member of our Hill Campus leadership team, who is responsible for the recruitment, growth, and retention of the faculty body - our most important asset - in alignment with the strategic directions of the school. The duties of the Dean of faculty include setting and championing an ambitious vision for our faculty’s composition and growth, supervising the recruitment and hiring of all faculty and program teams; and guiding professional learning and growth on the Hill Campus, both individually and within and across teams. The Dean of Faculty is deeply invested in fostering a professional culture which celebrates curiosity, belonging, and excellent practice; and participates enthusiastically in the life of the school through teaching, advising, and/or other meaningful interactions with students in the Middle and Upper Schools.   

Organizational Leadership

  • Participate in the overall strategic planning for the school, ensuring that the faculty's development aligns with the school’s long-term goals, is a common responsibility​.
  • Using Riverdale’s established standards for excellent professional practice, providing timely, accurate, and specific feedback to faculty.
  • With the Hill Campus leadership team, coordinate annual faculty contracts, job descriptions, responsibilities, roles, and stipends.
  • Bridge the gap between faculty and students, ensuring that faculty are actively engaging with students outside of the classroom in advisory roles, student clubs, and extracurricular activities​.
  • Work closely with other administrative leaders to develop and oversee programs that address students’ social and emotional well-being, which indirectly supports the faculty's role in student development.
  • Actively lead or support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the faculty and the broader school community.
  • With the Hill Campus Academic Dean, co-chair the Curriculum Coordinating Committee.
  • Co-chair, along with board members, the Student, Academic, and Faculty Affairs committee of the Board of Trustees.
  • Work with the Division Heads to allocate Faculty Development funding to meet the learning goals of individual faculty members.
  • Generally, serve as a visible administrative presence in all areas of Middle and Upper School life.

Staffing, Recruitment + Hiring

  • Working with the Head of School, Hill Division Heads, and Riverdale’s senior leadership team, determining annual hiring goals.
  • Establishing a long-term, innovative recruitment strategy to diversify our faculty and attract extraordinary teachers. 
  • Developing strategic relationships to increase the diversity of the pool of applicants now and in the future (e.g. Pipeline Collaborative, targeted colleges and universities).
  • Expanding mechanisms for how we reach potential candidates (e.g. social media content).
  • Developing and posting job descriptions and position statements for anticipated or known openings. 
  • Serving as chair of Hill Campus hiring process + committee(s).
  • Facilitating a rigorous hiring process which both incorporates the perspective of multiple constituencies  within the school and serves as a strong recruitment tool for highly qualified candidates.
  • Along with colleagues, attending hiring fairs, especially those with a focus on diversity, to interview and build relationships with new potential employees.
  • Facilitating the decision making process with the division heads (and hiring committees) to determine to whom offers will be extended.
  • Contacting candidates to extend offers of employment and managing their hiring through HR.
  • Supporting new employees until they begin work to ensure a smooth transition to RCS.
  • Tracking and reporting on the hiring process to recommend and implement improvements.
  • Tracking and reporting on faculty retention to identify trends, opportunities, and new needs.

Professional Learning + Growth + Retention

  • Building strong relationships with individual faculty members, in order to understand their goals and challenges to maximize support.  
  • Designing, organizing, and leading a rich program of professional learning experiences and opportunities for individual faculty members, teams, and divisions. 
  • Organizing and supervising mentoring programs for new faculty and new team leaders.
  • Organizing systems for gathering and learning from feedback - for faculty and teams.
  • Collaborating with key institutional partners to develop resources and programs that support health and wellness.
  • Developing and managing relationships with organizations and institutions who are key partners in our professional learning programs.

Transportation: Shuttle service is available to/from the 242nd St / Broadway subway station. Limited stops are also available near transit hubs in Manhattan including the Metro North Harlem Station and subway lines – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, N, Q, R, A, B, C, and D. If there is need in the community, we can also run a shuttle from the Henry Hudson Parkway / 246th St bus stop which connects to the #7, #10, and Express Buses to/from Manhattan.

Professional Development: A generous professional-development budget provides for conferences, skills training, and onsite training in areas such as mindfulness, coaching, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Grants and Stipends: All employees are eligible for Frankel Fellow grants, known as “passion grants,” which pay for enrichment activities. More than 120 grants have been made to faculty and staff since the program started in 2014. Stipends are available for coaching, affinity group facilitation, advising clubs with significant out-of-school time, and chaperoning trips (including global trips!).

Sabbatical:  Full time teaching faculty are eligible for a sabbatical after 10 years of employment.  

Health Benefits: Riverdale offers and subsidizes health, dental, and vision insurance.  In addition, the school offers a flexible spending account through which employees can use pre-tax dollars to pay for health-related expenses.  

Retirement:  Employees are eligible to join our Defined Contribution retirement plan through TIAA.  The school contributes 7% of an employee's annual salary to their retirement account.  

Vacation:  Riverdale Country School has a generous time-off policy for staff in addition to vacations afforded by the school calendar.
