Mission and Responsibilities:

The Subscription Platform group develops the core backend services for the New York Times’ digital and home delivery subscriptions - including the billing, payment processing and subscription management systems that have enabled The New York Times to grow to over 10 million subscribers. Our ambitious goal is to reach 15 million subscribers by 2027. We're engaged in several projects to break down monolithic applications into microservices. In doing so, we need engineers with experience building and operating distributed systems at scale.


Responsibilities:

  • Design and build the foundational tools that will enable our future subscription platform to ensure NYT's growth goals
  • Work with your team to enable resilient systems that can scale
  • Incorporate state-of-the-art  telemetry and observability in our platform to allow operational excellence
  • Identify security problems and improve the security aspects of our services
  • Develop processes for automating, testing, and deploying your work
  • Work with Project Management, Product Management and other professionals within your team and across the organization
  • Participate in the team’s on-call rotation. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables. 
  • You will report to Senior Engineering Manager, Subscription Management Platforms

Basic Qualifications: 

  • 3+ years of experience supporting modern infrastructure and distributed systems
  • Strong AWS knowledge and documentation experience
  • 1+ years of experience in Unix/Linux systems
  • 2+ years of experience with deploying and managing AWS services, such as EC2, S3, ECS, EKS, RDS, ALB, and Lambda
  • 2+ years experience in one or more scripting languages

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Java/JVM
  • Proficiency with Terraform, Docker, and Drone
  • Experience with ecommerce, finance, or subscriptions
  • Experience with SOX and PCI
  • Strong proactive cross-functional collaboration skills and ability to drive results
  • Bias towards action
  • Growth mindset
  • Experience building and maintaining scalable and resilient systems
  • Experience with continuous integration, continuous delivery, and infrastructure automation

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$140,000$155,000 USD
