Planned Parenthood of Maryland (PPM) is a not-for-profit family planning agency that provides high-quality, affordable reproductive health care for women, men, and teens. The Senior Philanthropy Officer (SPO) is a passionate advocate for reproductive and sexual health who is deeply motivated to advance the mission of Planned Parenthood of Maryland (PPM) through the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major gift prospects for all fundraising priorities of the organization and its entities.
The SPO is responsible for nurturing relationships for members of PPM’s Leadership Circle (giving $1,500+ annually). The SPO will work collaboratively with other members of the development team, especially the Development Officer and Director of Development.
The position is hybrid: 80% remote and 20% in-office.

Major Donor Cultivation, Solicitation, and Stewardship:
- Manage a personal portfolio of 100-150 qualified major donors and prospects to secure major gifts.
- Create and implement moves management plans for their portfolio for all aspects of the giving cycle including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship—inclusive of creating customized proposals, presentations, solicitation letters, gift agreements, and reports for major donors as needed.
- Work closely with the Development Officer and Director of Development to identify, qualify, cultivate, and solicit major gift prospects.
- Support administration of feasibility study in 2025, in preparation for PPM’s 100th Anniversary capital and/or comprehensive campaign.
- Conduct 80+ meaningful donor and donor prospect encounters per year, in-person or virtually, including the planning and execution of major donor gift renewals and upgrades.
- Provide logistical support for Director of Development’s portfolio.
- Collaborate with Director of Development to manage CEO, Chief Operating and Advance Officer, and Board Member portfolios.
- Along with the Director of Development and Development Officer, assist in planning a yearly calendar of donor engagement and solicitation at all giving levels.
- Plan and execute the major donor cultivation, solicitation, stewardship programs and keep top prospects informed, interested, and involved through targeted emails, semi-annual newsletters, CEO calls and video briefings, recognition events, etc.
- Along with the Director of Development, support and engage the Board members of the Development Committee and Gala committee in fundraising efforts.
Donor Management and Reporting:
- Record donor interactions, relationships, and other relevant information in the donor database.
- Assist with analyzing and reporting on solicitations, giving programs, and donor data.
- Maintain an annual, accurate donor portfolio in database.
- Maintain accurate donor portfolios for CEO, CO&AO, and Board Members in the database.
Special Events:
- With support from the Development Officer, coordinate and organize special events for major donors and other donor affinity groups by identifying potential guests, developing communications, designing the program, scripting, and run of show, and supervising event production, execution, and reflection.
- Engage major donors in the PPM Gala as Sponsors, Honorary Committee members, and/or ticketed guests.
Shared Development Department Responsibilities:
- Assist in segmentation of donor lists and work with team to determine donor strategies, content of solicitations, and coordinated execution.
- Communicate directly with donors and handle questions or concerns in a professional and courteous manner. Lift up any unusual or problematic discussions with any supporters or other constituents to the Dir. Of Development.
- Support members of the Leadership Team, Board of Directors, and other fundraising volunteers, and/or the CEO in outreach and engagement of donors at all levels, as needed.
- Represent PPM at meetings, community events, and conferences.
- Ensure that all Planned Parenthood donors receive the highest quality and most professional service.
- Protect the confidentiality of all Planned Parenthood clients, donors, and Board members.
- Other duties as assigned, including general support of the activities of the Development Department.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or experience equivalency required.
- Minimum four (4) years of frontline major or planned giving fundraising.
- Track record of building donor relationships, closing gifts in the four and five-figure range, and upgrading donors.
- A strong commitment to the AFP Code of Ethics.
- A passion for the mission of Planned Parenthood; previous experience with public health and/or BIPOC/LGBTQ issues.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, and Raiser’s Edge a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, assertive communication, a readiness to ask for and provide assistance and support to team members, and the ability to keep focused on the overall goals and mission.
- Flexibility and the ability and willingness to exercise initiative and independent judgment.
- Willingness to commit to 50% of time away from office or home office and have dependable transportation.
- Enthusiasm for frequent travel (both locally and long distance) and a willingness to work outside standard business hours on occasion is required.
- The ability to work closely and effectively with colleagues, senior management, volunteers, and the Board of Directors.
- A high degree of professionalism and the ability to maintain client and donor confidentiality.
- An understanding of health equity and racial inequities experienced within the communities we serve and a value of diversity, equity and inclusion.
