CORE Southern California is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Team Lead to oversee the cleaning of ash and smoke-damaged homes, and in coordination with government agencies and other partners, for potential role in debris clearing post-fire. This role requires someone with hands-on experience in debris management, heavy equipment operation, and large crew management. The ideal candidate will also embody a community-focused ethos, understanding the deep impact that fires have on both the environment and local populations. The Clean Lead will be responsible for directing field operations, ensuring that safety standards are met, and maintaining effective communication with governmental bodies, local organizations, and residents. 

This is a full-time temporary position for 6 months with the possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities

  • Home Cleaning & Restoration: 
  • Supervise the cleaning and decontamination of homes impacted by smoke and ash, with a focus on protecting residents’ health and minimizing further damage. Guide teams to address structural, interior, and exterior cleanups. 
  • Debris Clearing: 
  • Under the guidance and leadership of government responsible for safe clearing of home debris in fire affected areas, this position will serve as the primary point of contact between CORE, local municipalities, and relevant government agencies. Ensure compliance with governmental policies and permits. Coordinate the allocation of resources and secure necessary approvals. 
  • Crew Leadership & Management: 
  • Lead, manage, and support large crews of workers, ensuring productivity, safety, and morale. Provide on-the-job training and guidance to team members to maximize efficiency and quality of work. 
  • Heavy Equipment Operation: 
  • Operate and oversee the operation of heavy machinery (e.g., excavators, skid steers, backhoes) for debris clearing, site preparation, and land restoration. Ensure proper maintenance and safety protocols for all equipment. 
  • Community Engagement & Communication: 
  • Maintain a community-focused approach, liaising with local residents to understand their needs, provide status updates, and ensure transparency in the work being done. Be sensitive to the emotional and physical challenges faced by the community, offering support where possible. 
  • Reporting & Documentation: 
  • Maintain accurate records of all operations, including debris removal progress, waste disposal, and any issues that arise. Submit reports to CORE leadership and government agencies as required. 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction, debris management, or fire response operations, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role. 
  • Proven experience managing large work crews and operating heavy machinery in a fast-paced, high-risk environment. 
  • Strong knowledge of fire damage remediation, hazardous waste management, and debris removal processes. 
  • Proficiency in operating heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, bulldozers, and skid-steers. 
  • Familiarity with OSHA and EPA regulations, particularly in relation to fire recovery and hazardous waste handling. 
  • Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage diverse teams. 
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to liaise effectively with government officials, residents, and team members. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a community-focused, mission-driven environment. 
  • Certifications:  
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification (preferred). 
  • HAZWOPER certification (preferred). 
  • CPR and First Aid Certification (preferred). 
  • Personal Attributes:

  • Ability to make quick, sound decisions in high-pressure environments. 
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously. 
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and in challenging conditions, including outdoor environments and areas of significant destruction.
