The Tax Controversy Intern will be given a wide variety accounting and tax assignments under the supervision of different professionals.
What you will do…
• Become familiar with the firm’s policies and procedures.
• Interact closely with clients and interface on their behalf with federal and state taxing authorities for tax disputes involving examinations, appeals, collections, and other tax matters. Understand the rules, regulations, and Code of Professional Conduct of the AICPA.
• Attends and participates in professional education, including in-house industry group meetings, and participates in professionally sponsored training sessions.
• Obtain working knowledge of research techniques and various research sources in the firm library.
• Research various tax matters and draft technical memoranda to develop solutions and strategies to resolve client issues and support tax return reporting positions including IRS Information Document Requests, Notices of Proposed Adjustments, Protests of Proposed Examination Changes, Private Letter Rulings, Innocent Spouse Claims, and Reasonable Cause penalty abatement requests.
• Draft professional written responses to disputed tax agencies with case-related information and supported with applicable code section, procedural guidance and/or relevant court cases.
• Gather information needed to assist with debt collections efforts: Offer-in-Compromise (OIC), installment agreements, liens/levy assistance.
• Communicate regularly with management on the progress of open projects.
• Compile and organize supporting documentation for IRS examinations.
• Review and analyze IRS transcript information.
What you bring…
• Currently pursuing a degree in accounting and/or finance. Junior or Senior level preferred.
• Earned, or pursuing, M.L.L./J.D. preferred.
• Controversy and/or IRS experience is a plus.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & PowerPoint).
• Comfortable in a Windows environment.
• Demonstrates an understanding of the customer relationship journey.
• Ability to maintain discretion and protect confidential information.
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skill.
