About Wing:

Wing offers drone delivery as a safe, fast, and sustainable solution for last mile logistics. Consumer appetites for on-demand services are increasing, but current delivery methods are inefficient, costly, and contribute to road accidents and air pollution. Wing’s fleet of highly automated delivery drones can transport small packages directly from businesses to homes on-demand, in minutes. We design, build, and operate our aircraft, and offer drone delivery services on three continents. Our technology is designed to be easy to integrate into existing delivery and logistics networks, offering a scalable drone delivery solution for a broad range of businesses. Wing is a part of Google's parent company, Alphabet, and our mission is to create the preferred means of delivery for the planet. To do this, we must build a workforce that's representative of the global communities that we serve. If you're ready to do the greatest work of your life, come join us.

About the Role:

Wing is looking for a Senior Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) Simulation Engineer to join our Simulation Team team based in Palo Alto, CA.  The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of test platform development for embedded systems, demonstrated experience driving HIL simulation at scale, and the ability to leverage cross-functional expertise in efforts to develop this important capability.

Simulation is a core technology for Wing. It provides essential tools for R&D and is critical to ensuring the reliability of our fleet of autonomous aircraft. The simulation team’s work spans vehicle physics and sensor modeling, large-scale simulation frameworks, test infrastructure for backend verification and integrated avionics and system testing. The simulation team develops and maintains tools, processes, and infrastructures that enable verification and validation of Wing’s software and hardware.

As a Senior Simulation Engineer responsible for software on hardware testing, you'll be a key driver in ensuring the quality and reliability of Wing's aircraft software through robust HIL testing and verification. This includes owning the implementation of Wing’s HIL platforms, and the integration of HIL with Wing’s continuous verification infrastructure and software release processes. A key part of your role will be to work with various teams across Wing to efficiently identify, develop, and deliver HIL features that increase the scale and impact of Wing’s test infrastructure.

What You’ll Do:

  • Design, develop and maintain Wing’s HIL infrastructure for hardware and software integration and validation, with a focus on the embedded systems components and their seamless integration with hardware.
  • Ensure HIL availability, reliability and scale through both embedded development efforts and cross-functional workstreams.
  • Lead investigations into HIL test results, identify and analyze anomalies or failures, and collaborate with relevant teams to resolve issues.
  • Build new test platforms and hardware fixtures to expand the software on hardware testing across systems.
  • Support Wing’s growing fleet of aircraft configurations.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, guiding them in embedded systems development and HIL simulation best practices, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.

What You’ll Need:

  • 8+ years of experience developing and designing autonomous systems; including 3+ years of developing embedded test infrastructure.
  • B.S or M.S degree or equivalent practical experience in Electrical/Embedded/Computer Hardware/Aerospace Engineering or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects of significant scope and complexity, driving initiatives from concept to successful implementation.
  • Proficient programming with C/C++ and Python in a Linux environment.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded operating systems and their integration within HIL setups.
  • In-depth knowledge of hardware communication protocols and experience interfacing with sensors, actuators, and other hardware components.
  • Proven ability to effectively collaborate with diverse teams, including hardware engineers, software engineers, and test engineers.
  • Experience with perception hardware systems, and the integration of such systems within HIL.
  • Experience with software quality assurance, in particular verification and validation testing.
