What you will do

As a Staff Platform Engineer you will make impact on the way we build, operate and run our platform. This work will involve guiding both the strategy and implementation of Platform Engineering across our group, touching areas such as managing our cloud infrastructure, compute clusters, observability tooling, and our data stores. Deliveroo is growing and our infrastructure critically underpins this growth. and so having a security, stable, available and performant cloud environment is what you will have an influence on in this role. You will help achieve group-level goals and metrics. Occasionally you will lead work outside of the direct remit of your team benefitting other teams. You will report to managers and groups leads and together deliver the results.

Expectations

Technical Execution

• You will be considered an expert in at least one relevant technical area, sought out for reviews and advice by multiple teams and colleagues.

• Your work will also include forecasting and managing project timelines and risks, and setting a sustainable and incremental team pace.

• You will define the technical solutions for important business problems and understand the context in which large company decisions are made.

Collaboration & Leadership

• Align non-adjacent teams and disciplines to resolve unstructured and ambiguous challenges. This extends to coaching other folks across all levels and supporting up-and-coming leaders in the team.

• Lead the technical direction for platform teams, influence the strategic direction and build non-adjacent team relationships.

• Lead engineering interviews to help guide the understanding of the Deliveroo bar for all lower levels which often requires contribution in other recruiting areas outside of interviewing.

We want to emphasise that we don't expect you to meet all of the below but would love you to have experience in some of these areas.

• Pride in readable, well-designed, well-tested solutions

• Familiarity and practical experience in leading on the direction for a technical area in the platform space (eg. Kafka, ECS)

• Familiarity and practical experience with infrastructure tooling (Terraform)

• A strong background in software engineering, we work with Go and/or Python

• Leadership experience including coaching, team-building and generally supporting peers and colleagues

• Familiarity and practical experience with AWS cloud computing

• Familiarity and practical experience with datastores (PostgreSQL, DynamoDB and/or Redis)

• Familiarity and practical experience in building relationships with customer engineering groups
