The Center for AI Safety (CAIS) is a leading research and advocacy organization dedicated to reducing societal-scale risks from AI. We tackle the toughest AI challenges through a combination of technical and policy solutions, working closely with our sister organization, the CAIS Action Fund.

As part of our mission, CAIS is launching a new online platform dedicated to high-quality journalism and analysis on AI’s impacts on national security, politics, and the economy. This platform will publish timely analysis of AI policy and industry developments, opinion pieces from leaders in the field, and explainers distilling key insights from cutting-edge research. Our goal is to foster a more nuanced and well-informed public conversation on AI. It aims to be accessible to a broad audience and bridge the worlds of policy, national security, and research.

We are seeking a Staff Writer to contribute regularly to this new platform, helping to shape its coverage of AI policy, national security, and technological developments. This role requires a strong ability to craft clear, compelling narratives and a passion for translating complex AI and policy topics into accessible content. The Staff Writer will be responsible for researching, writing, and refining articles, ensuring factual accuracy, and collaborating with the Senior and Managing Editors and subject-matter experts to produce high-quality journalism.

In this role, you will:

  • Research, write, and revise high-quality news and explainer articles on topics related to AI policy, national security, and technology.
  • Develop clear, engaging narratives that break down complex issues into accessible content for a diverse readership.
  • Incorporate feedback from senior editors and subject-matter experts to continually refine your work.
  • Conduct thorough research to source reliable data and expert insights, ensuring all content is factually accurate and well-supported.
  • Work closely with editorial staff to ensure your articles align with the platform’s voice and mission.
  • Participate in editorial meetings and brainstorming sessions focused on content ideas and improvements.
  • Manage your writing projects from ideation through publication, ensuring timely delivery of articles in line with our editorial calendar.
  • Coordinate with designers or multimedia teams when necessary to integrate visuals and interactive elements that enhance your storytelling.
  • Monitor reader feedback and engagement metrics to understand the impact of your articles and inform future content strategies.
  • Stay updated on trends in AI, policy, and digital journalism to continuously innovate your writing approach.

You'll thrive in this role if you:

  • Excel at translating complex AI and policy topics into engaging, accessible narratives for diverse audiences.
  • Are passionate about deep research and uphold rigorous fact-checking standards, even in a fast-paced environment.
  • Appreciate a structured editorial process and welcome constructive feedback, valuing the role of journalism in shaping informed public discourse.

Qualifications of an ideal candidate:

  • 2+ years of professional experience in writing, journalism, or content creation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Political Science, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience) a plus but not required
  • Strong ability to write clear, compelling narratives and distill complex topics for a general audience.
  • Experience conducting in-depth research and ensuring factual accuracy in published work.
  • Ability to manage multiple writing projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with AI policy, national security, or technology reporting
