ABOUT SEO Scholars

For more than 60 years, SEO has created a more equitable society by closing the educational and career opportunity gap for ambitious Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and Native American young people. All are welcome to apply to our programs.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Associate Instructors will join SEO’s community of passionate educators to implement a rigorous college prep curriculum for motivated and driven high school students.  Using our original curriculum and a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, Associate Instructors play an integral part in supporting our Scholars’ journeys to a competitive college and beyond. Associate Instructors promote depth of understanding and skill acquisition by serving as a coach and facilitator of learning. Associate Instructors co-teach ELA for 10th or 11th grade Scholars.

Associate Instructors are the first to cover classes when instructors are out. Associates co-teach alongside Instructors to facilitate classroom instruction, teach mini lessons, organize small group and one-on-one instruction, and provide additional Scholar support. Associate Instructors do not have grading responsibilities.

9 Saturdays: 10/5, 10/12, 10/19, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16, 11/23, 12/7, 12/14Schedule:

    • Individual teaching schedules will vary within the 9:00 am-4:00 pm instructional time frame.

Weekly Hours: Associate Instructors are allotted 8 maximum hours per week during their seasonal employment, made up of Standard and Flex Hours.

  • Standard Hours are when the instructor must be working on site with staff or students instructing a class or engaging with an instructional prep or support period:
    • Saturdays, 9:00am-4:00pm (with a 50 minute lunch) = ~6 Hours/weekly
  • Flex Hours make up the additional “instructor work” educators know go into the job. This is time spent preparing for the lesson, grading, entering gradebook data, writing Scholar feedback, communicating with staff and Scholars, etc. These are hours put in outside of the required schedule and can be completed asynchronously throughout the week = up to 2 Flex Hours/weekly

There will also be future opportunities for Spring or Summer semesters

COURSES

  • 10th Grade ELA Curriculum: “Exploring Arguments”
    • How can we deconstruct and evaluate the arguments in nonfiction texts? How can we construct powerful and persuasive arguments in our writing? During our Saturday Academy classes, we will apply a critical lens to nonfiction texts as we identify techniques that writers use to present and support their arguments. We will assess how individual details and the text’s structure work to shape our understanding of the topic at hand. Additionally, we will work on developing and supporting arguments in our writing. We will use these skills to experience the process of writing as a form of inquiry that allows us to explore ideas and different points of view.
  • 11th Grade ELA Curriculum: “Personal Statement Writing”
    • In this course, we will focus on personal storytelling, with the goal of developing a personal statement for college applications next year. You will learn about personal statements, how to structure your statement, and you’ll have time to draft your statement. By the end of the course, you will have a draft of a personal statement that you can potentially use for your college application next year. Additionally, by the end of the course, you will have grown in your understanding of yourself as a writer, which will prepare you for college and beyond.
