Masterworks is a fintech platform that allows anyone to invest in shares of SEC-qualified blue-chip paintings by names like Banksy, Monet, and Picasso. So far, we have raised over $500M across 100+ paintings from more than 450,000 users. This year, we expect to buy more than $1 billion in art, making us the largest buyer in the art market.

The business has more than 180 employees, and has been featured in major media publications such as The NY Times, CNBC, CNN, WSJ, and more. After becoming profitable in early 2020, just three years after being founded, Masterworks raised $110M in its Series A round with a valuation of over $1 billion.

With the exception of our tech team, all employees work in our offices at Brookfield Place in the Financial District of New York City.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a Data Engineer to join the Masterworks Art Market Research team. A successful candidate will have a strong background in building and managing databases used for reporting, analytics and data science. This position will be responsible for architecting, building and maintaining Masterworks internal art market database, developing data pipelines for existing and future data collection processes and ensuring the data analytics team can access all art market data seamlessly. We are looking for an individual that can demonstrate the ability to work independently, take initiative, has a passion for innovation, and a strong technical data skill set. The role would be a member of the Research group at Masterworks and work closely with all members of that team.

Responsibilities Overview:

  • Assist in architecting a scalable and flexible data platform for Masterwork’s products and internal data engineering and data science teams
  • Make Masterworks data more discoverable, organized and easy to use for Data Scientists and Analysts across the company
  • Mature our existing data processing pipelines to modern tools and languages
  • Identify data infrastructure issues and propose solutions
  • Setup and configure Data Warehouse solutions, utilizing dimensional modeling techniques to create easy to use, scalable data infrastructure

Requirements and Preferred Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in data engineering
  • Skillset
    • Experience with Dimensional Modeling (Kimball methodology) & Data Warehouse design
    • Experience building ETLs via DAGs (Airflow)
    • Experience in Data Reporting & Visualization tools like Mode, Domo, Looker, Tableau and Redash
    • Experience with AWS data tools like EMR, RDS, Redshift, Glue, Athena, S3 and Lambda
    • Advanced knowledge of Python (Pandas, Jupyter Notebooks, Programmatic AWS via Boto)
    • Advanced knowledge of SQL (CTE, rank()ing / Windowing functions)
    • Ability to make sound, complex decisions in a fast-paced technical environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or another related field
  • Experience with building new databases from the ground up is a major plus

Measurements of Success in First 90 Days:

  • Gain familiarity with all existing Masterworks sources of data and collection processes
  • Outline and develop processing pipelines for existing data flows and collection process
  • Outline and begin to develop a relational database that can incorporate all existing (and future) Masterworks datasets

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to work in the office in the NYC area.
  • Must be eligible to work in the US - no exceptions.
