ABM Engineering is seeking a qualified Licensed High-Pressure Boiler Operator for an industrial & commercial site in Detroit, MI. This union position, represented by IUOE Local 324, will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation, monitoring, and maintenance of a high-pressure steam plant. In addition to operating the boiler plant during the heating season, this role will oversee and provide guidance to a Third Class Engineer while on shift. The operator will also support maintenance and shutdown preparations during the off-season and perform additional equipment maintenance tasks as needed in the attached office building.

Steam Plant Operations
- Operate and maintain high-pressure steam boilers, condensate tanks, and the deaerator during the heating season to ensure proper and efficient system performance.
- Monitor steam plant performance and respond to any alarms, making adjustments to maintain optimal system operation.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, operating procedures, and all applicable codes.
Oversight of Third Class Engineer
- Provide supervision and oversight to the on-shift Third Class Engineer, ensuring safe and effective operations within the steam plant.
- Delegate tasks, monitor performance, and provide guidance as needed.
- Ensure the Third Class Engineer performs rounds, inspections, and maintenance tasks to established standards.
Maintenance and Inspection Support
- Assist in the preparation and execution of annual maintenance activities, including the shutdown and inspection of boilers, condensate systems, and the deaerator during the off-season.
- Conduct preventative and reactive maintenance on steam plant systems, boilers, and auxiliary equipment.
Chiller and Pump Systems
- Operate, inspect, and maintain chillers and associated pumps as part of the overall mechanical system in the steam plant and office building.
Building Automation System (BAS)
- Monitor and adjust building systems, including HVAC, heating, and cooling, through the Building Automation System (BAS) to ensure optimal building performance and energy efficiency.
- Respond to BAS alerts and alarms, making adjustments as necessary.
Office Building Maintenance
- Perform maintenance tasks and inspections in the adjacent office building, including the upkeep of Air handling units (AHUs), Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes, Fan-powered perimeter heating boxes, Radiant heating systems, Chillers and pumps, Valves, controls, and other mechanical systems
Inspections and Documentation
- Maintain accurate logs of equipment performance, repairs, and maintenance activities.
- Ensure compliance with operational and safety standards and complete necessary reporting.
Safety and Compliance
- Enforce the use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to all OSHA and local safety regulations.
- Promote a culture of safety and ensure all staff follow established safety protocols.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid High-Pressure Boiler Operator’s License required (State or local jurisdiction).
- 5+ years of experience operating high-pressure steam boilers and related mechanical systems.
- Experience overseeing or supervising junior staff preferred.
- Strong understanding of boiler operations, including maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
- Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) for monitoring and adjusting mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with high-pressure boilers, chillers, condensate systems, and pumps.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to guide and mentor others.
- Valid driver’s license required for local travel between sites, if necessary.
- Strong attention to detail and safety-conscious mindset.
- Must be a member of or willing to join IUOE Local 324.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
- Must be able to perform rounds and inspections, including walking, climbing ladders, and accessing mechanical rooms.
