Role overview

In this role you will lead the Membership Engagement and Development team in delivering IOSH’s membership engagement and development strategy. You will lead the development, implementation and maintenance of the professional standards (competencies) which underpin and define the routes into the profession and each membership grade. As an experienced manager you will be expected to develop and motivate the Membership Engagement and Development team (comprising of the Member Engagement and Professional Development and Standards teams) to deliver outstanding results and ensure continuous improvement through new, innovative and efficient ways of working and a culture of evaluation and learning and performance management.


Knowledge criteria:

  • Working knowledge of the professional body and/or education sector
  • Understanding of working in a global organisation and of cultural differences and working practices
  • Understanding of the trends and developments in the OSH profession that will affect members’ career development needs

Skills and abilities:

  • Excellent communication and persuasion skills, both orally and in writing, influencing and negotiation skills, required to collaborate with a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to understand and demonstrate empathy to the needs and challenges of the membership journey for OSH professionals
  • Strong leadership and management skills to be able to build, lead and inspire an effective and efficient team
  • Solid analytical skills to inform decision making and business case development
  • Ability to work to deadlines, delivering a quality of work that meets or exceeds customer/stakeholder expectations
  • Financial and business acumen to develop and manage budgets and negotiate outsourced contracts
  • Ability to drive change


  • Demonstratable experience of developing and delivering engagement and services to a global stakeholder base.
  • Demonstratable understanding of professional standards (continuing professional development, Chartered standards and ethical practice).
  • A proven track record of implementing strategic goals, ensuring effective communication with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstratable experience of leading change and applying best practice in a membership environment.
  • Experience in leading a multidisciplinary team.
  • Successful experience in the development and delivery of major projects.
  • Achievement of financial or other project related targets.
  • Experience in analysing markets, developing customer value propositions and developing products and services for these markets.


  • Educated to degree standard.
  • Chartered membership of an appropriate professional body or equivalent.
