Kibana is the application platform for our Elastic Security, Observability and Search Solutions; the platform provides building blocks and user experiences that delight our users, accelerate development and optimize our operations. Deployed in cloud and on-prem, it is one of the largest open-source TypeScript repositories, with hundreds of actively contributing engineers!

We are looking for an experienced technology leader to help us evolve and improve our platform, that enables contributors to run fast and embraces the new wave of generative AI; someone who has designed and built multi-tier services and UI frameworks and shipped them in world-class products. If you have made critical decisions in the evolution of a platform and have led multi-year change programs in complex environments, we want to hear from you!

This role will be based in the United States, Canada, UK, Ireland, Spain, Greece, Hungary, Norway, Poland, Romania or Sweden - sponsorship and relocation will not be offered.

What you will be doing

  • Responsible for technical vision and architecture of Kibana
  • Leading the delivery of the forward-looking sustainable architecture
  • Delivering operational SLOs, improving processes, maintainability, testability, re-use, and reliability 
  • Collaborating actively with other senior technical leaders to align roadmaps, making appropriate technology choices and trade offs
  • Reviewing and approving implementation designs for core platform features
  • Supporting the contributor community, building engagement, providing best practices and ensuring alignment with architecture
  • Mentoring a dedicated and talented team of senior engineers

What you bring along:

  • Experience in a technical leadership role for a large and distributed team e.g. large projects, with more than 50 engineers 
  • Experience as a change leader, having delivered successful architecture evolutions and/or migrations
  • A pragmatic approach, experience balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders
  • Experience building UI, API and backend platforms targeted at developers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, a great teammate with strong analytical and problem solving skills

Bonus Points:

  • Experience using the Elastic Stack and Kibana
  • A good understanding of UX principles 
  • Experience with a statically typed language (e.g. TypeScript, Flow, Go, Java, etc)
  • Understanding of JavaScript frameworks (e.g. Node.js, React, Redux)
  • Has worked on software with a plugin system (e.g. Webpack, Bazel, grunt)
  • Experience running or significantly contributing to an open source project
  • Experience in Security, Observability or Search domains


Compensation for this role is in the form of base salary.  This role does not have a variable compensation component.  

The typical starting salary range for new hires in this role is listed below.  In select locations (including Seattle WA, Los Angeles CA, the San Francisco Bay Area CA, and the New York City Metro Area), an alternate range may apply as specified below. 

These ranges represent the lowest to highest salary we reasonably and in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting.  We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the ranges may be modified in the future.  

An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Elastic believes that employees should have the opportunity to share in the value that we create together for our shareholders. Therefore, in addition to cash compensation, this role is currently eligible to participate in Elastic's stock program.  Our total rewards package also includes a company-matched 401k with dollar-for-dollar matching up to 6% of eligible earnings, along with a range of other benefits offered with a holistic emphasis on employee well-being.

$249,700$394,900 USD
The typical starting salary range for this role in the select locations listed above is:
$299,700$474,000 USD
