The Molecular Lab Supervisor is accountable for the accuracy and reliability of all wet lab services provided by the Molecular department section under his/her immediate control. The Molecular Lab Supervisor is responsible for day to day supervision and oversight of the wet lab operation, personnel and for monitoring processes to ensure that acceptable levels of performance are maintained.
The Molecular Lab Supervisor is also responsible for helping in the implementation of all wet lab procedures and operations as well as ensuring that metrics established to measure quality, production and efficiency are strictly followed.
Responsibilities:
  • Under the direction of, and in the absence of the Laboratory Manager and/or Medical Laboratory Director, the Molecular Lab Supervisor ensures adequate performance of all wet lab procedures.
  • Performs high complexity clinical tests by following department procedures as needed (frequency not to exceed applicable state regulations for exempt employees).
  • Presents data and/or information across all levels including the lab, department, division, and corporate, and proficiently answers questions from all groups of staff, managers, and clients.
  • Recommends and endorses test methods to include validation, documentation and implementation of test systems.
  • Develops and maintains detailed laboratory procedures manual to meet accreditation and licensing requirements; ensures departmental SOP's accurately reflects the current process; updates SOP's as needed.
  • Provides direct supervision of the laboratory operation and personnel performing high complexity testing and reporting of test results by qualified technologists.
  • Reports any problem cases and/or abnormal findings to the Cytogenetics Laboratory Manager and/or Laboratory Director to ensure timely resolution and/or follow up.
  • Initiates and monitors QC programs for the department; assures compliance with regulations; monitors all quality metrics and ensures that corrective actions are documented and implemented.
  • Responsible for the selection, retention, and training of qualified laboratory personnel; ensures that Laboratory staff is trained and compliant with SOP's and Skills checklists.
  • Resolves technical problems in accordance with established policies and procedures; remains available to testing personnel at all times that tests are being performed to provide on-site telephone or electronic consultation.
  • Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
  • Assures that corrective actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the department's established performance specifications.
  • Ensures that all personnel meet the regulatory requirements and have adequate knowledge of the test systems for which they are responsible.
  • Attends laboratory management meetings and informs his/her staff of pertinent information.
  • Ensures that technical personnel are responsive to client requests or problems.
  • Actively supports and complies with all company, departmental, and safety policies and procedures.
  • Prepares employees reviews, approves time and attendance records, maintains training files and performs other administrative duties as required.
  • Monitors the preparation of solutions and reagents for laboratory procedures on a monthly basis.
  • Monitors laboratory log books, specimen accession sheets, workflow drafts, etc., to ensure quality assurance of specimens.
  • Monitors the performance of various housekeeping and/or maintenance tasks to keep the laboratory and equipment in clean and operable condition.
  • Reviews and signs PO's prior to submission regarding supplies used by the laboratory staff in order to maintain sufficient inventory.
  • Maintains advanced knowledge of CAP/CLIA requirements and is knowledgeable with the specialty requirements within those organizations for assigned discipline.
Additional Responsibilities (may be assigned):
  • May head up the validation processes through documentation and development of procedural operations for new tests or new lots following manufacturer's guidelines and/or established department SOP's.
  • May work with the Molecular Laboratory Manager or Medical Director in the establishment or formulation of new projects, designing new monitors as well as working with other departments in corporate projects, etc.
  • May serve as the Education Coordinator for assigned department's state approved training program
  • May serve as a technical resource for the department by investigating and resolving analytical testing problems, recommending a course of action in instances identified as beyond acceptable limits, and responding to non-routine/complex inquires and/or requests from clients and sales representatives.
  • May assist in coordinating orientation and continuing education programs for all licensed departmental personnel.
  • May assist the Laboratory Manager or Director of Operations in establishing budgetary controls and maintaining cost at an acceptable level. May prepare reports detailing departmental activities, revenues, expenses and the like, as needed.
  • May serve as the Safety Officer.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Molecular Laboratory Manager or Laboratory/Site Director.
Position Objectives:
  • Achieves desired level of competency and accuracy for the main department processes and responsibilities of assigned position, as defined in established SOP's, within 6 months.
  • Meets or exceeds productivity expectations.
  • Reports quality results with limited errors.
  • Maintains satisfactory results on all department specific competency assessments.
  • Works productively and efficiently to achieve company and departmental goals.
  • Effectively schedules and manages resources to meet department goals.
  • Communicates effectively with all levels of staff.
Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences.
Experience:
  • At least six (6) years of experience in Molecular.
Qualification Requirements:
  • Advanced understanding of laboratory techniques with emphasis on Molecular specific techniques.
  • Ability to make sound decisions under stressful situations.
  • Proven leadership and problem solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communication with all employees and clients.
  • Strong computer skills to accomplish tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and maintain production and quality standards.
  • Must be able to work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and standards outlined in the Safety Manual.
  • Good visual acuity including color perception required for certain departments.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Certificate Compliance Requirements:
  • Nationally: ASCP certification for the assigned specialty
  • CA: California State License
