Junior Protection & Controls Technologist

Location: Spruce Grove, AB or Calgary, AB

Overview:

Utility Services group is responsible for performing various power system studies, Protection & Control Design & Implementation work, Commission and Maintenance on Power System Protection Equipment. The position will be based in Alberta and the successful candidate will report to the Technical Manager, Utility Services.

The primary role of a Protection & Control Technologist is to perform programming, testing, and verification of protection & control devices and controls in the field. You will be responsible for testing, commission or maintain power system transmission distribution control equipment. This position requires interfacing with clients, owners, consultants and construction crew and therefore strong oral and written communication skills is essential.

What will you do as a Protection & Controls Specialist?

  • Perform field testing, verification and programming of various IEDs from manufacturers such as SEL, GE Multilin, GEC Alstom, Siemens, Square D and ABB. For this reason, any prior knowledge and experience with secondary injection testing equipment such as Omicron will be considered an asset.
  • Perform field testing, verification of field control wiring within a live substation.
  • Maintain or Commission Power transmission and distribution equipment including Power Transformers, Circuit Breakers, HV Switches and Instrument Transformers.
  • Modify and mark up engineered drawings such as Single Line and Three Line Drawing.
  • Be safety conscious and have the willingness to learn Electrical Lockout/Tag-out procedures and gain Electrical Safety Awareness.
  • Read and interpret electrical AC & DC schematics, AC three-line, logic diagrams and SLDs. Inspect, test, operate and troubleshoot AC & DC control and protection wiring schematic.
  • Be familiar with industry-specific codes and Standards (OESC, IEEE, and NETA).
  • Ability and willingness to travel for out of town for commissioning or maintenance projects.
  • Familiarity or willing to gain familiarity with testing different types of high voltage and low voltage equipment.
  • Report, record, compute and process electrical test information in accordance with accepted standard practices.
  • Responsible for working semi-independently under general direction and will progress to carry out non-routine tasks of substantial variety and complexity.
  • The successful candidate will require a sound understanding of related electrical principles and practices.
  • Responsible for the analysis, decisions and recommendations needed in connection with technical problem-solving.
  • Promote quality service to ensure employee, customer and supplier satisfaction.

  • Other duties as assigned

Do you have the Spark? Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • 2-year Electrical Engineering Technology diploma or a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Degree
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • CET or technologist with significant protection & control testing experience is encouraged to apply for this position.
  • Candidate having Substation SCADA experience, but lacking protection experience will be considered for this position and are encouraged to apply
  • Must be available to travel 60-70% of the time throughout Alberta
