This position serves as the guest-facing nutritional expert for Dining Services, Student Health, and Athletics. They support the Roanoke College community by providing nutrition expertise, oversight of Dining’s nutrition and inventory management software, and operational support in the promotion of nutritional health and well-being on campus, as well as providing counseling and nutrition coaching on dietary needs. The Dietitian & Nutritional Systems Manager will also serve in a supporting role for special projects related to benchmarking, operational analysis, recipe standardization, and menu planning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide guidance and direction around nutrition issues for unit-level dining operations, Student Health, and Athletics.
- Oversees the management of Dining Services’ food management (Jamix) software, and supports the operational management of point-of-sale (Cloud POS), and other software.
- Provides specialized guidance for students with dietary restrictions, food allergies, health conditions, performance nutrition, or other wellness-related needs.
- Documents and outlines accommodation plans with students. Works closely with health and wellness professionals to ensure comprehensive support and referrals when needed.
- Designs and implements programming initiatives on various topics related to nutrition.
- Participate in culinary sampling and conduct nutritional review for new and existing products and recipes.
- Ensure the ingredient, nutrition, allergen and trait information is accurate for all items in the nutrition database.
- Support the committee who reviews meal plan exemption requests.
- Help support audits and responses to food or ingredient recalls.
- Support investigations related to food allergy incidents; consult with affected individuals.
- Work collaboratively with stakeholders to advise on the planning for special functions.
- Lead food allergy training and instruction for Dining Services staff.
- Serve on the student dining advisory committee’s monthly meetings.
- Work to achieve high quality customer satisfaction scores on NACUFS benchmarking.
- Maintain confidentiality and discretion where applicable and appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:- Must possess current Nutrition and Dietetics Technician (NDTR), Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or similar credential at time of hire and throughout employment, and be legally eligible to practice in Virginia.
- Knowledge of, and experience with food service operations as they relate to menu planning, units and measures, recipe standardization, and food safety.
- Effective leadership and interpersonal skills to provide guidance, coaching and mentoring to various clients and stakeholders.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in the English language, including active listening, dynamic flexibility, and critical thinking, and ability to multi-task and ensure effective time management.
- Advanced computer skills and experience with computerized menu management systems and knowledge of office and industry software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, database management, e-mail and web-based applications. Ability to learn new programs.
- Excellent decision making and reasoning skills, and excellent ability to develop original ideas to solve problems and perform operations and quality control analysis.
- Excellent and effective independent or autonomous work skills.
- Knowledge of business and management principles involved in planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership techniques, production methods and coordination of people and resources.
- Ability to teach and train others to meet desired outcomes.
- Possess current ServSafe Food Manager certification, or obtain within 6 months of employment, and renew as needed.
- Possess current FARE or other food allergy training credentialing, or obtain within 6 months of employment, and renew as needed.
Education & Experience:
- Ability to communicate in, read, and write the English language.
- Providing one-on-one and group nutrition counseling.
- Performance or athletic nutrition counseling.
- Working in a professional, commercial, and/or high-volume kitchen.
- Working in college & university setting.
- Working with food management and other foodservice software.
Special Conditions of Employment:
- This position may qualify for partial remote working opportunities, but will require numerous in-person/on-site work requirements each week.
- Satisfactory conviction history background check.
- Maintain a valid VA driver’s license, a clean DMV record and successful completion of required Roanoke College driver training programs.
- Dining services staff are considered essential personnel. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension due to weather or other emergency condition, this position is expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension.
This is a salaried 12-month position with full college benefits. This position is primarily on-site, with up to 2 days per week remote.
